John Carpenter Wins Plagiarism Case Against Luc Besson Over 'Lockout'

Box Office described the picture as "a sleek, slick and shameless rip-off of John Carpenter's Snake Plissken films 'Escape from New York' and 'Escape from L.A.' " And Carpenter himself agreed.

The director took production company EuropaCorp and the film's writers — Stephen St. Leger, James Mather and Besson— to court over the matter, claiming they plagiarized his work. Surprisingly, Carpenter has won. These kinds of cases are notoriously difficult to prove, let alone win, but in this case, a French court ruled that enough similar distinctive elements from Carpenter's "Escape From New York" were borrowed to merit a sanction.

Europacorp has been ordered to pay 20, 000 euros to Carpenter, 10 000 euros to the screenwriter (the script is credited to both Carpenter and Nick Castle), and 50 000 euros to the rights owner of the movie.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiinteresting.

AMAZON STUDIOS TO RELEASE NICHOLAS WINDING REFN’S HORROR FILM NEON DEMON
http://nerdist.com/amazon-studios-to-release-nicholas-winding-refns-horror-film-neon-demon/

Amazon Studios takes another step forward with original programming by picking up the rights to Nicholas Winding Refn’s next film, Neon Demon.

According to Variety, Amazon will release the picture in the Summer of 2016. It was jointly produced by Gaumont and Wild Bunch, the same groups that brought us Refn’s previous outing, Only God Forgives. Amazon’s theatrical release all but ensures that they’ll get first dibs on the film’s post-movie house life. Amazon is placing itself right next to Netflix in the content creation, distribution, and exhibition game. Could these be the next big studios?

Neon Demon is a horror movie starring Elle Fanning as Jesse, a girl who moves to Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming a model. She comes across a group of women so obsessed with beauty that they will go to any lengths to take Jesse’s from her.

When forming the idea of the film, Refn told Variety, “One morning I woke up and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty.”

Refn’s filmography also includes 2008’s Bronson, starring Tom Hardy, and 2011’s Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. The latter film was a critical success and earned Refn the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival.

If Refn matches even a portion of the visual style he created with the three previously mentioned movies, his transition to the horror genre will be a successful one.

Neon Demon also stars Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, and Jena Malone.

So what do you think about Amazon’s big movie into movie theaters? Are you looking forward to Refn’s next film? Will the lack of Gosling affect your desire to check it out? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.

Werner Herzog Tells Jen Yamato Of Walking In Ice, Ecstatic Truth, Getting Shot By That Minor Bullet And Saving Joaquin Phoenix From A Car Crash

“Joaquin Phoenix, sure,” he said, pronouncing Phoenix’s first name in his heavily German-inflected accent. “What do you do if somebody flips over and flies through the air and lands on the roof and you are the first one there? You’d better stop your car and try to help.”

On that day in 2006, Herzog just happened to be at the right place, at the right time. “He was upside down and airbags [had] deployed. He was literally head down, upside down,” he recalled. Phoenix desperately wanted a smoke as he lay trapped and in shock, but Herzog intervened. “I tricked him into a moment of lack of attention and I snatched the cigarette lighter, because there was gasoline dripping and he was locked inside. There was no way to get him out because the car was too crushed. Some other people came and helped and we had to crush the rear window, and that’s how we got him out.”
