Disney has just hired David DiGilio, whose only previous feature film credit was writing the Paul Walker dog movie Eight Below, to write the next chapter in the saga. But will it actually make it to production?
Brian Cox: Steadfast and IRONCLAD
Cox/Giamatti and lots of sword violence. You KNOW you are gonna want to see this.
Variety is reporting that Diego Luna (pictured right; Y Tu Mama Tambien) is in talks to sign up for active duty in the flick. If the deal is sealed he'll be joining the previously announced Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga and William Fichtner in this upcoming sci-fi thriller that tells the tale of what happens when a battle ensues between aliens and humans for the right to colonize another planet.
HBO started kicking the tires of Neil Gaiman?s novel American Gods back in April as a possible series to be produced by Playtone?s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, with Gaiman on board as writer and executive producer. Goetzman revealed details this weekend to THR: Playtone is planning six season of 10-12 hourlong episodes with a budget of $35-40 million each season. American Gods will premiere in 2013 at the earliest.
That?s a lot of money for a weekly series ? minimally $3 million per episode, more than most broadcast shows. Playtone is used to the Daddy Warbucks treatment from HBO ? the network reportedly budgeted The Pacific around $225 million (over $20 million per hour).
The listing has American Gods at 624 pages. Under a six-season plan, that?s about 8-11 pages per episode, which totals up to Not Enough Material. (I am not familiar enough with either property to know if the spinoff novel Anansi Boys can be folded into the story.) Given that Gaiman is on as a writer (presumably the head writer), I hope we see all the ideas tossed around in his head and in his notes during and since writing American Gods. Clearly I need to go read the book, though I have a couple years to beat the series premiere.
Speaking of which, I may be cynical, but I believe it is folly to announce a six-season plan so early, even on HBO. Fellow HBO series Carniv?le also had six seasons in mind, yet was cancelled after two.
Here?s the official synopsis for Bellflower:
Bellflower follows two friends as they venture out into the world to begin their adult lives. All their free time is spent building flame-throwers and weapons of mass destruction in hopes that a global apocalypse will occur and clear the runway for their imaginary gang ?Mother Medusa?. While waiting for the world to end, their call to excitement comes unexpectedly when one of them meets a charismatic young woman and falls hard in love. Quickly integrated into a new group of friends, they set off on a journey of betrayal, love, hate, infidelity and extreme violence more devastating and fiery than any of their apocalyptic fantasies.
Here’s the official synopsis for John Carter:
From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
Neighborhood Watch is a script that has been in development at Fox for some time, beginning with the period when it was going to be a Will Ferrell vehicle. The story centers on a small neighborhood watch organization that really exists so that dads can get time away from their families. Things get complicated and dangerous when the group uncovers a dangerous and otherwordly plot.
Stanton also talked about how they approached the extremely sci-fi premise of the film involving a Civil War veteran traveling to Mars, dealing with low-gravity and battling giant aliens:
?I looked at things like Apocaplyto and Rome and even things like Shogun and Lawrence of Arabia, things that as a viewer I could accept as having a level of historical research. They give me a sense of what it would be like in that land and in that age. So then you ask, ?Well, what if we just did our Martian research really, really well and treated it as a period film?? There are so many times and places in history in our world that I just don?t know anything about, and when I learn about them they?re always fascinating. I don?t need a predisposed interest in them if they are presented well. So we said, ?We?ll treat it this way, we won?t treat it like some fantasy being fulfilled by a fan.? We tried to make it feel like we?re going with the story of what really happened.?
It took a few months to cross all of the t?s and dot all of the i?s, but Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon has finally closed the deal to write Disney?s upcoming family adventure pic, Magic Kingdom. Back in March, we reported that Chabon was in talks to pen the project for director Jon Favreau and now, three months later, Heat Vision is confirming the news. While there aren?t a ton of plot details available for Magic Kingdom, we do know that the film will take place in the Disney theme park. Per the report, it may also integrate other theme parks on a global scale (don?t get your hopes up, Six Flags?you?re probably not included). In addition to landing Magic Kingdom, Chabon was also in the headlines earlier this week when Darren Aronofsky signed on to direct the pilot for his HBO period drama, Hobgoblin.

Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn Talk LOGAN?S RUN
On the fence about Gosling, but if NWR keeps using him, that's a big bonus. They MUST give Michael York a small cameo.
I met Mr. York when I worked in a 1 hour photo on the corner of Roscoe & Sepulveda...the man couldn't have been more down to earth or gracious. Every time I watch an Austin Powers flick I smile when Basil comes on.
They MUST give Michael York a small cameo.
