All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Condemning this for having a simple story is the same as condemning the original Star Wars for the same thing. It's what you do with the story that counts. And please, stop trying to justify Tron 2 as anything more than a pretty light show.

C'mon, JD... tell me what the difference is.

Tron 2 was not fun. I struggled through it. Jon Carter is fun and sure, a lot of the plot elements have been done before but simply because they were admittedly stolen from the original Burroughs novels. Now, you can use your logic to argue this vs Avatar, because that's more apples to apples. But Tron 2 was a movie where the plot was put there solely to justify the state of the art effects. Jon Carter has what that movie doesn't...a heart. Tron 2 is a cold electric lightshow. Like you were all saying when I railed against Tron 2...shouldn't you see it before you weigh in?

Sure, sure. I was just curious as to what was different about the since what I was reading was "it's a **** story, but good fun". I don't disagree with anything you've said and, like I said, I expect I'll enjoy it when I get around to seeing it.

I certainly can't argue that Tron: Legacy had any "heart" to it, that's for sure.

To quote a good review, "John Carter Is a product of a simpler time, when sense of adventure was paramount, and this movie has it in spades." Tim Martin, The Mercury

Well said, Tim. This isn't some over-hyped Cameron job with a plot so thick with environmental activism (though there is a bit, and I'm willing to look beyond that for what the rest of the movie is) that it makes you want to vomit. This is a modern telling of a classic adventure story. Had it amped up the plotline too much, it would have been overdone and would really have taken from the "forget-the-world-for-a-time-and-have-an-adventure-at-the-movies" quality it really does have "in spades."

And had this movie been directed by John Cameron, I'm sure every one of these buffoon critics would have practically fallen over each other to fellate it.

This is the best breakdown of this movie yet. It makes me a little sad too because it almost feels as if with all the advances in tech that there is really no place for what amounts to old fashioned wide eyed wonder. I also have to think that if Star Wars(the original) came out now...it would be a dismal failure.

Battlestar, Walking Dead, True Blood stars join forces for spoiler PSA | Blastr

Stars of the sci-fi and fantasy genres have joined forces for a good cause. They want you to stop ruining their shows. Well, not just their shows, but TV in general. Spoilers are running rampant, and they're making it hard to enjoy television. So these actors have come together to put an end to spoilers once and for all.

Over at College Humor, they've produced a special PSA to raise awareness about spoilers. They've gotten out of control, and we have to stop them. Watch as stars from True Blood, The Walking Dead, Heroes, Dexter, The Wire and Battlestar Galactica give tips on how to nip unwanted spoilers in the bud.

When visiting websites (like this one), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette, True Blood) says spoiler alerts are considerate but shouldn't be expected. So go online at your own risk. Also, if someone spoils a show for you, you can get revenge by ruining something for them. But only if it relates to TV. Don't get personal.

IRON SKY Review

However, the movie remains enjoyable enough with its own brand of silliness. Part of the humor is throwing lots of zany humor at the audience and switching between playing it straight and playing an Albert Einstein look-alike as an evil Nazi scientist. Up until the end, Iron Sky is light enough to swing between different brands of humor without seeming desperate. While desperation never sets in, the humor fades away, and the movie morphs into a wannabe Dr. Strangelove but with space battles. Vuorensola deserves credit for using his limited budget to get the most out of his green-screen effects, but eventually the setting and the plot overpower the goofiness that had made Iron Sky so enjoyable.

Iron Sky is worthy of applause for using moon Nazis as a launching point rather than just recycling the joke for 90 minutes. The moon Nazis get the ball rolling on the silliness to come, and the film remains light and airy enough to drift between different comic styles. Except for a couple clever parodies, the humor is usually good enough to get some laughs, but never great enough to be particularly memorable. But ending with a bland space battle and a trite message does a disservice to everyone, both Earthmen and moon Nazis alike.

Rating: B-

I think it's ****ing pathetic that after 4 or 5 days of being released the entire world is calling Carter a "flop" and a "reject" and every other name under the sun.

Since when do civilians give a **** how much money a movie makes compared to how much it cost to make? The world is entirely too cynical these days and it makes me sad and angry. Sandgry.

MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN Film in the Works at Warner Bros.

Summoned from the mind of “The Phantom” creator Lee Falk, Mandrake used his superior intellect and powers of hypnosis/illusion to foil the plots of such deliciously pulpy foes as arch nemesis The Cobra, master-of-disguise The Clay Camel, and his evil twin, Derek (who, despite the name, is also quite formidable). At his side throughout is Lothar, a former African prince who aides Mandrake with his near-unparalleled physical strength.

Oh please, not that I am racist, but PLEASE make a note for note version of this. Somehow I think that's less racist than the eventual PC'ing of the character.

The only point I agree with is #10.

Saw it for the second time last night with my daughter, niece, nephew, and nephew's girlfriend. The all said it was a really enjoyable movie. The second time through for me, it was easy to analyze stuff like plot inconsistencies, acting, etc. I won't lie...there's some cheese in there that I didn't notice before, but it's not enough to wreck the goodness of this movie for me.
