All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Did anyone watch Defiance last night? I was pretty much disappointed. The potential was there (story and back story was interesting) but they blew it. Does ScyFy have a chance to stay on the air?? Will they ever get something to the standard of BSG again? Man it PO'ed me last night. It feels like sales of the video game is more important then anything. Thoughts?

My wife and I watched last night, and I didn't mind it too much. It has kind of a DeepSpace 9 vibe to it, in that Defiance is more or less a waypoint where these different races meet and interact/argue/fight lather rinse repeat. If they are spending a lot of money on this, it must be on the ton of cgi they needed to create a futuristic earth---and it STILL looks cheap. I wonder if that town square will be the extent of the exterior sets for the city itself.
Perhaps I was a little disappointed, but I had already seen the 14 minutes sneak preview, so I wasn't expecting much. I will give it another shot or two. My wife had no opinion, as she fell asleep about 15 minutes in.

Fair enough.

Methinks the budget was for the advertising of the video game ...

24Framespersecond.net - OBLIVION: Review

It’s a shame because the premise of the movie, something I can’t say without giving it all away, is actually really good. It’s just badly executed. The movie just becomes a ‘switch your brain off and enjoy’ when it should have made you think and question. For a Friday/Saturday night out it’s ok, but if you’re looking for an enjoyable film I’d personally save my money and wait for Iron Man 3, Man of Steel or Pacific Rim. If it’s high end sci-fi you’re after then Star Trek Into Darkness is just around the corner.

Unfortunate. The movie is currently at 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. Might get a chance to see it this weekend with my dad.

Yeah...reading mixed things. Sounds like he was trying for some sort of high social commentary that got mucked up and watered down. It's already a hit overseas, and I think it'll do pretty well despite the lukewarm reviews. I keep getting the feeling that it's not a bad movie, just one that could have been a lot better.

Cillian Murphy Cast in Wally Pfister’s ‘Transcendence’ | /Film

The new actor in this case is someone with whom Pfister should be very familiar, as they’ve done four films together. Pfister was director of photography on the last three Batman movies, and Inception, each of which featured Cillian Murphy. Now Murphy will play one of three lead male roles in Transcendence, with the other two played by Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany. Rebecca Hall, Kata Mara, and Morgan Freeman are in the film as well.

Jack Paglen scripted, and we know that the story revolves around a couple of scientists (Depp and Bettany), with Depp playing a guy whose consciousness is housed in a computer after his physical form is killed.

Pretty nice cast they are giving Nolan's guy to play with first time in the sandbox.

Saw Oblivion last night. I wanted it to be really good. I really did.

It wasn't.

Oh sure...visually, it was stunning. Story-line, however, was very unoriginal and for that reason very predictable (think Moon combined with Wall-E combined with The Matrix combined with 2001 with smatterings of Total Recall). There were just so many holes in the plot. Secondary character development was horrid (as in the only need for Morgan Freeman's character in the movie was to give Morgan Freeman a spot in the cast list...his character wasn't developed at all).

I really really wanted this one to be good. It just wasn't. I sincerely hope you all enjoy it more than we did.

Thought Oblivion was really good. Not the most original of Sci-Fi ideas and I'm sure you could pick pieces of it from 10 other movies, but everything worked quite well once they got to the explanation part.

I also got a big 'Videogame vibe' but even talking about which one would be spoilery. Soundtrack is amazing too.

I did like the soundtrack.

Who did it?

Ah...M83. Sort of a Daft Punk like organization out of France.

A Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo! Must See! - Dread Central

A while back a short film was created by Hideaki Anno, Hayao Miyazaki, and Shinji Higuchi in promotion of a museum exhibition titled Hideaki Anno's Special Effects Museum. So why are we telling you this now?

With Pacific Rim and Godzilla getting all the giant monster love lately, we figured we'd show you cats a prime example of what makes these flicks so good and entertaining. Below you'll find the film Kyōshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru, which translates into A Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo, and even though there are no English subtitles, believe us when we tell you you're not gonna need them to enjoy this eight-minute long flick, which was directed by Higuchi.

What Doc? It was a real good script moreso than Fleischer's direction...that's all I was trying to say. And by slight I mean it was a very short flick. Good concept, good performances...a really good movie. Fleischer has done nothing since to show that it was his talent that lifted that movie. That was all I was really trying to say.

Alright then.
