All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Think it's safe to do spoiler talk now? Or should we wait a little longer?

I think we can maybe do it starting now but with SPOILER ALERTS. There are a few surprises in this movie and I would hate for someone to be put off from watching the eventual home release by thinking they had nothing to watch it for.

Review:

Skillfully blending well-orchestrated spectacle and scope with heart, soul and thought-provoking ideas, Matt Reeves’ “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” acts in the mold of the ideal, classic blockbuster. Filmmakers will often give lips service to this model, but achieving this goal is usually much more easily said than done. And ‘Dawn’ nails it. Deeply engrossing, with rarely a dull moment over its 130 minute running time, this gripping picture sets the benchmark for all summer blockbusters to aspire to this year. [B+/A-]

I am really glad to see Jason Clark getting more roles. That guy rules.

Also, Matt Reeves should be considered a Director from now on. :)

I don't know why you wouldn't have before. Cloverfield may have been an acquired taste, but it certainly did a lot of things well. Let Me In may have actually improved some of the original, and this is just getting rave after rave.

I actually have not yet seen Cloverfield, so my sample of his work is still limited to one film, Let Me In, which I loved immensely.

If this movie is as good as I've read, then I would totally fight someone twice my size to defend his honor.

You would be well served to check Cloverfield. Very divisive due to found footage/handheldLateNiteShakeyMonkeyCam, but it was the first movie, for me, to really capture the awesome WTF that a gigantic force of nature unleashing brain damaging fury would feel like. NOTE:The Mist did it in that one scene at the end, but Cloverfield had it throughout. Written by Drew Goddard, and for ****s sake Adgy...it has Lizzy Kaplan in it. What exactly is the reason you have not seen this? That's a head scratcher, and this is coming from the guy who still hasn't seen Exorcist.

Cloverfield is awesome. It is about an avenging angel sent from space to kill the crap out of as many hipsters as it can find.

Is it Dawn talk time yet?

Or Snowpiercer spoiler time?

I still think Snowpiercer has a chance to be seen by more people than have seen it so far. In my opinion we should proceed with discussion, just with SPOILER ALERT notices in case someone has an interest but not the opportunity to see this.
As far as Dawn, maybe hold off on spoilers for another week, after Saturday we can open it up. I saw it yesterday and will post my non spoiler thoughts later...

Snowpiercer Tries to Reinvent Hollywood's Distribution Model - Businessweek

Instead, Quinn hopes this idiosyncratic release strategy will broaden the range of options available to distributors of smaller films in a ruthless marketplace. “Whether you’re a giant studio release or a small indie, nowadays you’ll gross the majority of your expected box office in the first four to six weeks,” he says. “So why not figure out a better way to maximize that opportunity—when people are talking about your movie and wanting to see it—instead of holding back on these very restrictive theatrical windows? I think this might change the way a lot of people think about film distribution.”

I think it's a smart move. Release smaller movies more gradually. Let word of mouth spread a bit.
