HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Movie Image

The first image from fairy tale re-imagining Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has gone online. The movie stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the eponymous characters who are all growed up and looking for a little payback against the witch community. Arterton tells Entertainment Weekly that the movie is “as much Pulp Fiction as fairy tale.” So how do you defeat witches? Do you burn their gingerbread houses to the ground? Judging by this image, witches are terrified by the black leather.

Hit the jump for the full image plus more on what Arterton had to say about the movie. The film also stars Famke Janssen and Peter Stormare.

I think this one is sort of flying under the radar, could be fun. If nothing else, Stormare clipping his toenails would be worth watching.

LOCK-OUT Trailer

An international trailer for James Mather and Stephen St. Leger‘s sci-fi action thriller Lock-Out has gone online and despite the outer-space setting, the movie looks like a solid little thriller. Guy Pearce stars as wrongly-accused spy who must rescue the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from an orbiting prison. The Taken comparisons since both films were produced by Luc Besson, and once again Grace must be rescued by a guy with the special training to get the job done. The good news is that Pearce does a great job of selling the tough guy routine, and the action looks fun even though the cinematographer may have gone to the J.J. Abrams’ School of Needs More Lens Flares.

Hit the jump to check out the well-cut international trailer. Lock-Out opens April 20, 2012.

Big fan of Pearce, this looks like a solid little under-the-radar flick.

Orphan writer adapting futuristic graphic novel Last Man Standing

http://www.slashfilm.com/orphan-writer-adapting-futuristic-graphic-man-standing/

Remember that awesome looking graphic novel called Last Man Standing we published all that artwork for in 2010? The one Paramount picked up to be made into a film before the book even hit the shelves? If not, click here for a refresher course or just bask in the coolness of that header image. It took a while but Paramount has finally found their man to pen a screenplay based on the Daniel LuVisi graphic novel and it’s David Leslie Johnson, the writer of Orphan, Red Riding Hood, Wrath of the Titans and The Walking Dead.

Last Man Standing, which was published under Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle creator Kevin Eastman’s Heavy Metal banner, is about a famous, genetically enhanced solider who is framed and endures nine years of hellacious incarceration before getting out and vowing revenge. It’s also futuristic, violent science-fiction...

LMS (Last Man Standing) tells the story of Gabriel, the last living Paladin soldier. Genetically engineered, he is a warrior of supernatural strength, anointed as the guardian of Amerika and its people. Admired and celebrated by most, Gabe’s world takes a sudden turn when he finds himself framed by the terrorist group Pandemonium, for a series of atrocious crimes he had no part in. For these alleged crimes, Gabriel is sent to the treacherous Level-9 Prison Facility and incarcerated with the very scum he helped put away. After nine years of torture and agony, the once famed hero kills his captors and escapes the 9 levels of hell he has been condemned to. From here on forward, Gabriel embarks on a journey into the heart of darkness; the New Amerika, a world filled with colorful and deadly characters that will either help or try to eliminate him ? neither of which attitude is always transparent. As the once invincible hero digs deep to unravel the true reason behind his framing, he also discovers a problem he never had to face before: He’s dying; and quickly.

The original book, which seems like it’s damn near impossible to find and goes for $650 used on Amazon, was planned as a Bible for LuVisi’s world in the hopes that the story would be expanded into different mediums. That’s now happening, both with the movie, and hopefully as a Heavy Metal comic.

Zoe Kravitz May Join Will Smith and Jaden Smith in 1000 A. E.

Earlier this year, we reported that Will Smith and his son, Jaden Smith would be co-starring in director M. Night Shyamalan’s new sci-fi project, 1000 A. E. Now, Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) are in early talks to join the picture as well. Depending on whether or not the deals are worked out, Kravitz would play Smith’s daughter and Okonedo would play his wife (take that, Willow and Jada).

The plot of 1000 A. E. is “set 1,000 years into the future, where a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.” The script was co-written by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and, you guessed it, Shyamalan himself. 1000 A.E. is schedule to hit theaters on June 7th, 2013. Hit the jump for more.

THR reports that Kravitz and Okonedo are in talks to fill out the Smith family. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing all the Smiths united on the big screen to act out a sci-fi family action-adventure: the conflict of 1000 A.E. involves the father and son team crash-landing on an inhospitable future Earth, in which the failed-warrior son must rescue the heroic father. And that’s not to take anything away from Kravitz or Okonedo, I just think it would be interesting to see the First Family of Hollywood in a project together.

and the world trembled in anticipation.

Has anyone here read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. My friend keeps talking it up and the library is getting me the first book of the series this weekend.

I got a couple of books in, that was about a decade ago. The first few are some of the best fantasy books I've read, but I personally thought the story grinded to a dead halt after that. It could have been just a rough patch but I got to the point where I simply couldn't read another page so I had to move on. Try it out though, I found it very enjoyable for a time.
