Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Sergey Bodrov’s fantasy-adventure film Seventh Son. The plot follows mystical knight Father Gregory (Jeff Bridges) and his apprentice Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) and their fight to defeat the evil witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) and her followers. The VFX-heavy trailer promises a large-scale entry into the fantasy genre and a goofy Jeff Bridges performance, but despite the impressive cast (and Big Lebowski reunion), it’s tough to tell whether this one will be a winner. The genre is a tough one to crack, and it’s unclear if Warner Bros. has something more substantial than recent flops like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters or The Brothers Grimm in store for audiences. The pic’s release date was recently moved (again) from this coming October to January due to delays in the visual effects process, but a push to January is rarely the best of signs. Here’s hoping Seventh Son proves to be a pleasant surprise.

Here’s the official synopsis for Seventh Son:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Ooof yeah...January is dumping ground. And it's been moved a few times already. Not even the Big Lebowski reunion can save this stinkeroo.
 
Jesus christ, that trailer is poorly made. So many cuts, my eyes could barely refocus between them. Maybe I'm getting old.
 
The only thing that could save that is if they could find a ten-minute title song lying around some place. Also, I suspect Jeff Bridges plays with madness.

Saw that trailer today in advance if Pacific Rim. Gotta say it looked horrible. Very dark, lighting-wise, which made it virtually impossible to follow the action from cut to (too numerous to mention) cut. Up a stop or two on the exposure meter and this movie could be beautiful...even if it is Jeff Bridges, forsooth.

And why is it in every movie he's in lately does Bridges act just like Rooster ****ing Cogburn?? This one...RIPD...ugh. Get a haircut and lose Colonel Sanders' beard, Jeffery.

Variety critic Scott Foundas doesn't mince words, calling the movie "an enormously ambitious, visually stunning and richly satisfying futuristic epic" and one with a something to say as well, as "the film reveals itself as a surprisingly thoughtful contemplation of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man, and whether mankind is worth trying to save at all." Meanwhile, the guys over at Twitch have also seen the movie and were equally blown away, calling the apocalyptic flick "the most accomplished overseas work of any Korean filmmaker to-date...in many ways he's already beaten Hollywood at its own game. A tour de force of science fiction, 'Snowpiercer' is a singular and breathtaking cinematic experience."
