All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Yeah. Get a better vocalist. The voice of Minmay in the Japanese-language Macross was Mari Iijima, and her voice is amazing.

Casting in general is touchy for this, as many of the characters have lasting roles throughout the three sagas. Can't think of any mainstream actors that I'd like to see as the main characters, either.

They not only would have to cast the right actors for the parts; they would have to put a serious eye towards casting some actors who sell tickets, generate good reviews, or both. My personal preference is to grab a good number of people coming off of critically acclaimed cable shows that either ended or killed off their character, because you get generally get a great actor for cheap, who brings along a following from reviewers and the audience.

It would also be very helpful to get a name director who will make things feel as real as they can when there are transforming fighter planes involved. You want to open up serious separation between you and those crapsterpieces Michael Bay created.

Even though they will almost certainly cast an actress for Minmei and dub her if she can't sing, I would see if Elize Ryd can act. She looks very young and could probably pull off 'spoiled princess', and her voice can be very poppy for a symphonic metal vocalist. If they Taylor Swift the music (or worse), they are going to lose a lot of the comic-con crowd.

And there needs to be some reason why Rick doesn't run to Lisa right away...

Simon Pegg Says Idris Elba not Playing a Klingon in STAR TREK 3
http://collider.com/star-trek-3-idris-elba-not-klingon/

And that may be the case. Of course, I remember Pegg saying something a few years ago about how Khan wasn’t going to be the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness. Honestly, it doesn’t really matter to me either way if Elba is a Klingon or not. It just matters if he’s a compelling character who’s worthy of the actor’s talent.

OK, let's run with this idea of using actors from shows that have ended. And mind you these are people I just came up with and how they'd match up with Robotech characters. Y'all will disagree or will have thought of actors you think would be better suited for each role

Rick Hunter - Aaron Paul/Charlie Hunham
Roy Focker - Jon Hamm/Leonardo DeCaprio (rumor has it he has been waiting for this movie to materialize so he can be in it)
Lisa Hayes - Maggie Siff (Somehow that one makes a lot of sense to me)
Lynn Minmai - Maggie Q
Max Sterling - Chris Pratt (if he isn't already busy with Guardians)
Captain Gloval - Sam Elliot (the stache!)/Bryan Cranston

And somehow Kim Coates needs to be cast

Ha! watch Justified. The stache is no more

I could see both your Ricks. I was thinking Richard Madden, but no idea if he can play younger and na?ve. His former TV cousin probably could, but he is still manning the Wall. As the main character, this is probably where they have to actually get an established box office draw. He has to be young though, and I beg them not to cast anyone from some teen love triangle dystopia series.

I don't care much who plays Roy, so if Leo wants to do it, maybe. He seems a little small of stature to play the part though. It is the best place for a big star though. Or Sean Bean, of course, but I don't want to overdo the Thrones factor. Berenthal?

I actually did think of Maggie Siff as Lisa, but like you I am not sure why.

Strongly disagree with Maggie Q and Chris Pratt. I would not be surprised if they did go with an Asian actress for Minmei, since she is the one major character who might be Japanese (Lynn not a very Asian name though). I cannot see Maggie Q as a young superstar singer at all. And I thought Max is supposed to be a bit of a nerd, whereas Chris Pratt is pretty bulked up. I'd have Pratt play Roy. Max Sterling? Joseph Gordon Levitt.

When I was thinking of Gloval, Edward James Olmos came to mind but then I recalled that he maybe played a similar role in a television show (that I've never seen). Might as well sell JD a ticket and put Ron Perlman in there. Ooh I really do like that.

Miriya? Summer Glau might be typecasting, but I'd be remiss to not take someone from Firefly.

I can't really play this game if we stick to strictly recent miniseries/series stars because I don't watch enough television to know who many of these people are. I will say that Bryan Cranston was my first thought for Gloval (and he has familiarity with the Macross universe, having voiced Isamu Dyson in the English dub of Macross Plus). Aaron Paul I can't see as Rick Hunter at all. I could, however, see Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I'd have more fun casting the Zentraedi, I think. Steve Buschemi as Exedore, anyone? HAH!!

I'm with you on the prog-metal soundtrack, though. Devin Townsend has said that he's working on a symphony at the moment, and I could TOTALLY sploosh my jeans thinking about him getting involved. But as amazingly talented as he is, he's very much NOT the type to work on a project like this where he has to answer to anyone but himself. I could see going with a band like Scale The Summit to create the soundtrack (it's something I'd do were I to win the lottery...find an epic sci-fi space opera story that someone has created but doesn't have the funding for and have it made into a feature with them writing the music), and an excellent rangy female vocalist for the protoculture. Give a listen to this track from StS and tell me what you'd think of that.

And I'd need to throw Lynn Collins in for my vote as Lisa Hayes.

Yeah, she has a pretty good look there. Also really liked the song. I may have to look into that band.

The youth of Rick and Minmei (and really, Max is supposed to be young too I think) makes it tough because I don't know many very young actors that are good and can sell tickets. Most cable shows have older actors. I was trying to find a place for someone from The Shield.

Oh, what about the main guy from Graceland as Rick? Chris Pine came to mind as well, but can't use him since he already has another space opera going.

The opening Robotech theme is pretty dramatic, so I'm trying to think of which band really leaves the subtlety behind and just comes all out. It also seems like it needs to be keyboard heavy or symphonic. Maybe Stratovarius or Royal Hunt. Nightwish and Within Temptation might not be bombastic enough currently, so I'd lean toward Xandria or maybe Damnation Angels. Actually, screw it, Nightwish is still plenty dramatic and has actually made a dent in the US market. Just leave the new guy with the pipes at home. Tuomas is into Disney and fantasy; he might be more than down for it. You could have Minmei perform some of the ballads and midtempo songs from the Olzon albums.

I am 100% certain they need to go with having it feel realistic. I want to see and hear machinery cranking as the legs bend out from the Veritechs. No CGI - models. Very large (not 1:1 or anything, but large) models.

We did this a few years ago when Toby maguire was attached to the film. My list hasn't changed:

Rick Hunter - Justin Chatwin (shameless, war of the worlds)
Max Sterling - oddly enough, Toby Maguire
Ben Dixon - Seth Rogan
Admiral Gloval - Ciran Hinds
Exedore - David Wenham (van helsing, lord of the rings)

That's it for now

Daniel Craig - Roy Fokker (too old now)
Claudia Grant - Angela Bassett (too old now)
Minmei - Olivia Munn
Lynn Kyle - Arifin Putra (raid 2)
Bretai - Idris Alba
Lisa Hayes - Andrea Riseborough (oblivion, Brighton rock)

Yeah, if you teleport her right from Oblivion, she would be perfect.

Tobey Maguire on the other hand would lead me to skip the movie.

Rather than returning to mimic the theme from the animated series, I'd prefer something new and theme-based that has occasional harkening/homages to the original score...which, although it was artfully original and definitely dramatic, was INCREDIBLY repetitive.

As for characters, I could go for Riseborough as well...but she's already nearly 35 and in my opinion plays more a young-looking 40-something rather than a mature-looking 20-something (Lisa was supposedly 15 when the SDF-1 first appeared and only 25 when she became the ship's XO). Claudia was only two years Lisa's senior, so she'd need to be a young up-and-coming actress as well. The thing for them to remember as far as I'm concerned is that the crew of the SDF-1 was young and inexperienced at the beginning...Roy was probably the oldest and most battle-hardened.

By the way, here's your Rick Hunter:
asa_butterfield_9_by_happymuskratpngs-d6r0y49.png

Asa Butterfield. 18 right now...experienced enough actor and did a not-half-bad job as Ender Wiggin. He has the look at least. While you're at it, give Hailee Steinfeld a tryout at the role of Miriya.

You also have to be realistic. You can't have 18 year old flying veritechs. Late 20's early 30's would be the appropriate age group.

Also, both Claudia & Roy were mentors. Nothing wrong with them being 10-15 years older.

Roy was ten to fifteen years older. Rick was supposedly born in 1990, would have been 9 when the SDF-1 arrived, and 19 when it first flew...probably over 20 when he finally enlisted and began combat flying. Crazier stuff has been done in times of war like what they're supposed to be going through getting from the vicinity of Pluto back to Earth than letting kids fly planes. Minmei was three years younger, making Rick a potential statutory rapist...

Lol. So true. I see your point.
