All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Two thumbs up for me on 2049! Would not bother with the 3D though if I were you (3D was the only showing I could get to).

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it.

It doesn't help that I'm trying to process it as 3 things - a standalone film, a sequel to a classic, and a sci-fi movie.

Overall, I was at least fine with it, though I felt like it was a bit needlessly long in places. I get the beats it was trying to establish, and it had the style of the original to match up to. But still, there were times where I felt like, "Okay, we got it. I think we can move one."

I was glad I saw the shorts before I went. I would've been fine without them, but it was nice having that context.

I like that they tried to establish that this is a different universe than the one we live in. And while they did have a few nods to the original, they didn't overdo it.

****MINOR SPOILER ALERT****

The Pan Am sign was a very nice touch with respect to both of the above.

And the giant Atari billboard.

So I saw it last night. I am a huge fan of the original. To me it was going to be hard to top no matter what. Simply put 2049 was one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen. The script and directors vision was an enormous challenge but the story was a basic straight forward narrative, which I liked as it allowed me to enjoy the visual spectacle.

I spent some time trying to process it and have to say I liked it. The great shout outs to the original - the Atari and Pan Am call outs - but also the character surprises were great and I very much enjoyed them. I will say it seemed bloated by some minutes and that director is obviously the biggest proponent of pregnant pauses and plaintive looks I have seen and he could've cut a few of those. Tyrell's "gift" was big surprise and I have to admit I did think about that over the years. The fact they did it was a great twist. I liked Gosling as well as Leto. It was well acted. Just very much liked it. I need to see it again and I urge anyone who wants to see it - SEE IT IN THE THEATER!
