I just read this article. Hmmmm. The basic framework seems to be there, but we'll see how much it deviates from the book. From the looks of that article, it seems like quite a bit.
Alex Garland wrote the screenplay adaptation, and he's got a twisted mind, haha, so should be interesting nonetheless. And it wasn't that long ago that the book came out, but I have forgotten parts of it. Dunno, I read a lot, and sometimes a consequence of that is forgetting what and when I read something, lol. I just have these plots in my memory from somewhere that I can't always place. ;)

Speaking of deviating from the novel, I read Alex Garland's The Beach which is probably his most famous novel, which I enjoyed, but couldn't get myself to watch the movie adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio. Seemed so very different in tone and weirdness from the book. Garland should consider remaking that, well, after if and when he gets to make his Swamp Thing movie. ;)
 
Annihilation had some flaws, and it is NOT for everyone.
If you like old old old school 'trippy' sci fi, and you like a movie that leaves you with just as many questions as answers...you might dig it.


Sound design and a really impressive creature are straight up nightmare fuel btw.

It's a shame that people generally stayed away from this this weekend. Our audience had audible groans at times and there was a lot of I want my time/money back grumbling on the way out. I think time will eventually prove this to be a valid cult movie. Not an easily digestible experience...at all. But it's a shame that today's movie goers are so spoiled and need a movie to be linear and over explained. It's not a perfect movie by a long shot. But neither was 2001. And this is very much in line with that as far as it's sensibilities. Entertainment, much like every other damned thing in this society is turning into predictable spoon fed crap.

I didn't like it as much as I liked Ex Machina, but I liked it. I especially liked that everything was not explained in easily-digested, bite-sized pieces. The mystery really stayed a mystery. Cool.

I wasn't expecting it to get Marvel money, haha, of course not, but I was thinking it would make at least twice as much as it did. Sigh.

I'll get to it sometime this week. I don't watch movies on opening weekend, unless they have Wonder Woman, haha. Ugh. Justice League!

Anyhoooow, I still think there's been a slew of good odd science fiction movies as of late. Hopefully, it continues, but when not enough people go watch these movies, well, you know how that goes. :(

Y'all should still read the book if you haven't. Jeff VanderMeer's latest novel (came out last year), Borne, is also wonderfully weird. Despite changes and deviations, I am surprised any of his weird books got made into a movie.

I like the fact that list is making comparisons between Annihilation and Andrei Tarkovsky. Makes it sound even more intriguing to me. :good:

I saw "Annihilation" this past weekend and dug the hell out of it. It felt like a real Sci-Fi movie, the likes of which you don't see much anymore. It delivered on that promise way more than a movie like "Sunshine," which I was also had hopes for but that one fell really flat for me.

Lots of questions with no clear answers that may parallel issues in of the day. An interesting premise, again, with no conclusion. Lots of clues as to what was happening, but not too obtuse.

I did feel like there may have been a few minor parts left on the cutting room floor that could have fleshed a couple of things out. But that was a slight blip among a lot of great points.

Never read the book, but enjoyed the movie.

Four out of five Darbs.

It's going to suck terribly and be fantastic and we will all still debate our own personal successes in life by our significant others enjoyment in random 80-90s pop culture
 
Was Annihilation too brainy for the box office?
