All Things: TELEVISON

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey to Star in Crime Series TRUE DETECTIVE

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are teaming up for what could be one of the most exciting drama series in recent memory. The two are set to star in the eight-episode first season of True Detective, with Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre director Cary Fukunaga onboard to helm all eight episodes. The show is described as an ?elevated serial narrative? that uses multiple perspectives and time frames. Harrelson and McConaughey will star as two detectives ?whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.? Hit the jump for more on the project, including how long Harrelson and McConaughey plan on sticking around.

Per Deadline, the concept for the show is to resolve the mystery at hand at the end of the first season, with subsequent seasons utilizing the same structure but with different characters and story (not unlike the anthology approach to American Horror Story). I maintain that we?re living during a Golden Age of television, and the storytelling approach to True Detective sounds like it will fit in perfectly.

Beyond the fact that a Harrelson/McConaughey cop drama sounds bad ass, Fukunaga is an incredibly promising young director. He?s already proven that his visual and character-centric prowess transcends genre by going from the violence-heavy Sin Nombre to the Gothic romance drama Jane Eyre (and executing both to great success), and I can?t wait to see him put his stamp on the ?cop drama? genre.

Producers are currently shopping the project, written by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing), to the cable networks, and I?m selfishly hoping it lands on HBO. Though the network definitely has a ton of successful series already on its plate (with many more to come), the premium channel allows for an enormous amount of creative freedom that I think would give Fukunaga the room to flourish creatively.

Agree wholeheartedly to the boldened part. Really happy that American Horror Story is influencing other shows with it's format. There is all kinds of room to grow from there.

Touch still struggles, Thrones stays strong and 22 more genre shows | Blastr

The fact that Awake is almost certainly going to be cancelled KILLS me. There was an episode 2 weeks ago(the one w/the fbi profiler & serial killer) that not only was a little mini movie squeezed into a 40 some odd minute episode but also showed all these LOST wannabes how you roll out your long plan backstory. This is a show that is just so well done and the few glimpses they give into the greater plan of the show are fantastic. Just a real shame.

I am still watching this show even though I find my myself asking myself why. It's extremely formulaic and repetetive w/the main character constantly making dumb decisions. I wouldn't be so mad about it if AWAKE, which is a FAR superior show, wasn't dying.
Was that guy really eating chapstick?

Fun show that has stretched 1 season waaay long, yet I keep watching too. I just like it! (and does tend to be quite graphic at times).

Monroe is great

But lookahere....

How long can a show like Awake REALLY stretch it's premise? I mean I love the show... but I'm already starting to get antsy for an answer. Just because a show is good and has a good hook doesn't mean it should last 3, 4 seasons etc etc...

As for Grimm... Grimm is just so much well made fluffery. If it goes away I'd never miss it but I enjoy each episode.

ooooh, we have a conversation here. First off, Monroe is awesome. Not enough of him on the show. And what is with NBCs rollout of the show? On for 2 weeks off for 3 back on for 4...etc. Like I said, still watching but it frustrates me that this admittedly junky show is doing better than AWAKE. And Doc I have to disagree(surprised?) between the serial killer hinting at things to come and the penguin from 2 weeks ago...oh yeah and if he moves in one world(Portland?) does he sever ties with the other, etc. I am not getting tired with the mechanics of the show. I am truly fascinated and each week seems to bring a new potential twist that they aren't forcing. Maybe I am more patient than most, but I think the episodes stand alone storywise while casually getting us involved in the long term mythology. Just the way it is done as I have said, with one world the 'loving mother' psychiatrist with the muted subdued light and colors to the other, male, more prickly psychiatrist with the bright sunny washed out colors...it all works. Jason Isaac is a tremendous anchor...just broken enough to pull it off. The kid suffers from the pouty male child that almost all shows seem to be dealing with these days, but it's a small thing. I may be overly sentimental but there is usually at least one moment per episode that genuinely moves me because he is dealing with such a love/loss situation. I think Awake is a show that not only has more potential but is certainly doing far better work already than Grimm.

like poetry

speaking of Grimm - I love how the potions seemingly made no sense, yet Monroe's soon-to-be girlfriend was able to come up with solutions so quickly. (who recognizes her from old episodes of MTV's Undressed? - I should smack myself for coming up with that).

that one episode with the dude and his stripper daughter breathing fire by making themselves vomit was ******g great.

Hypothetically it has more potential........ but at some point both worlds have to move past the recovery stage of post accident grief... and then what?

You just have a crazy man dealing with two different lives. He doesn't have to be dreaming to do that and he doesn't have to have dead relatives for that either. The real hook is the trauma and not wanting to let go right? I dunno I just think it's one of those shows that might be really great as a one season show but I hope they don't try and hint at too much stuff that never gets resolved.

Like LIFE did.

See, I disagree with that based solely on the mysterious discussions between the Captain and her superior(?) in the hinted conspiracy, and the serial killer's tease about folks that slide sideways between the worlds. Maybe the eventual endgame will be more than just trauma resolution. It may just be hopeful fanboy-ism on my part but I could see a scenario where they change the whole dynamic of the show and Issac's character hunts others like the serial killer who have been 'altered' by whatever conspiracy caused the captain's people to stage 'the accident' and make Britten what he is. The writers of the show are free to take this idea and run with it by the way. And, what if, the 2 psychiatrists are actually 'handlers'...see that's just one of the directions they can go in, regardless the writing/acting is so strong that I want to see more.

'Homeland' Executive Producer Drops Season 2 Hints | CraveOnline

But the truth about Brody may come to light during the second season of "Homeland," this fall. During a brief interview with TVLine, "Homeland" executive producer and showrunner Alex Gansa dropped a number of teasers for the new season, including the identity of Brody's latest nemesis: Mike Faber (Diego Klattenhoff), who was Brody's best friend and the former lover of Brody's wife, Jessica (Morena Baccarin).

“Mike is going to be a big factor,” said Gansa. “Since he’s in military intelligence, he is going to get a hold of the commission report on the assassination attempt against the vice president, and there’s going to be a bunch of stuff in there that doesn’t make sense to him.”

Gansa also addressed the more difficult question of how Carrie would reenter the intelligence community after her mental problems got her thrown out of the CIA. And Gansa was quick to acknowledge that the series can't simply sweep those events under the rug.

“It would have been too far a jump to bring her back into the fold full bore,” admitted Gansa. “However, there are ways that she can work around the edges of the intelligence community that make sense.”

Gansa noted that Carrie will get back involved with the Abu Nazir investigation very quickly, even if she is no longer welcome at the CIA. Regarding Carrie's moment of realization at the end of the first season finale, Gansa added that she will eventually realize that she was right about Brody.

“There’s a tremendous sense out there in the audience of wanting Carrie to know that she was right, that she’s not crazy and is really good at what she does, and that’s the moment we’re going to be building towards,” noted Gansa. “Whether it’s going to happen in Season 2, I can’t tell you.”

See... this is more Boba Fett Syndrome bull****.

The conspiracy can't possibly be anywhere near as cool as you want it to be. What's the end game? That both realities are real and he's just a brain in a jar somewhere? Then that compromises everything that makes the show actually interesting. It ceases to be a human drama about characters and just becomes another stupid sci-fi red herring laced macguffin fest.

I know that you're an unapologetic honk for that kind of **** but I'm just enjoying a simple show about a simple guy who's dealing with an unfathomable choice.

I don't want or need complex over thought conspiracy bull****! It never ever ever ever EVER works out or is ever as cool as you want it to be. Boba Fett was better when we didn't know who he was!

Ok...I don't recall pissing in yer cheerios...anyway, I am enjoying the simple show as well. But you mentioned that the premise might be 'too thin' to merit more than a one and done. I disagreed and simply presented one of the directions that the concept could be taken in to flesh it out some. I am an unapologetic honk for things I like, as are you(need I cite references?) my original point was that I love AWAKE and I think the overall package is better than any show on network tv right now. All this is pretty irrelevant though because nobody seems to be watching.

Thrones dominates, Being Human gets a bump + 22 other genre shows | Blastr

It seems that Awake might have finally bottomed out. After weeks of dropping viewers, the show posted a small gain Thursday night, but it remained below the 3 million viewer mark and didn't pick up any ratings gains. It's getting harder and harder to image this show surviving.

Hurm. Only chance this has is if NBC decides to let it run and hope for the best. Even with it's low ratings it isn't like they have anything else breaking viewer records.

Wow, Big Bang Theory is really really popular. I feel sick to my stomach.

Hmm... upon reading my post again it came off way more personal and hostile than I had intended.

Apologies.

We're cool Doc. I know not to take it personal. You actually made some good points so there was that too. I really did like the 'unapologetic honk' tag. That was creative and well deserved. I own that brother.

are you saying this show sucks? (i'm drunk so my normal serious meter is broken). because i've watched this 2-3 times and don't get the love. i think this show is stupid. i'm a science nerd and can appreciate quirks and aspects of that sort of intelligence, but this show just does not do it for me. i honestly don't get why it's so popular.
