Anze Kopitar wins NHL’s Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for third time

Congratulations, Captain. You are truly an inspiration, history will remember you warmly and accurately. Thank you.

I actually wouldn't mind if he were a little less of a gentleman on the ice.

A lot of hockey talking heads think the Lady Byng is irrelevant. I tend to agree with them.

It is an irrelevant trophy. Like basically all awards are except for those that result in a Cup win (or at least in a Cup Finals appearance) or a blockbuster trade that restocks the organization.

Auston Matthews' Hart trophy is irrelevant if, for example, the Leafs never come close to a Cup with him as their main guy and he never gets traded for a ransom.

That said, I find it quite ridiculous that a fair number of posters "ridiculed" Kopitar for winning the "least of the trophies" in the past while I'm willing to bet a lot of them are losing their (your?) minds when watching players take absolutely boneheaded penalites, like Fiala does, while also losing against Oilers for the past 5 seasons who are at the very top of the league when it comes to using powerplay to their advantage.

Kopitar had 4 PIM in the previous regular season AND playoffs. 4. FOUR. I had to double check when I read that info on our local news outlet. And he did that while playing about 20 min/game against the teams' top lines in key FW defensive role. And that was for the second time in the past 3 years. That means he was basically available for ALL penalty kills this season which is also a huge boon (a good PK player is not that much of a boost if he's in the box for half of the PKs for example).

Of course it would be silly to have a team full of such players that never goon it up, BUT...having such a player as your cornerstone is IMO extremely valuable, and he's also a good example for younger, inexperienced players. I'd be willing to bet Fiala wouldn't take so many bad penalties had he "grown" under Kopitar's wing.

Shots fired. =) Bullocks bringing that heat!

If it's any consolation B, any current hater will be tearing up like a healthy adult expressing the proper amount of emotion the day his number is retired to the rafters. It all evens out. We are just ahead of the curve.

Thought this was a thread about buying weed. Fooled me.

Congrats Kopi!

Yeah I was ready for my fake doctor exam and everything for outdated medical weed joke purposes. I saw one of them dudes after the military and he's like got the stethoscope on me but not in his ears and said not to eat red meat cause it's the problem. And congrats on yer weed Kopidor! I still think we need a new captain but that's irrelevant.

My post was not an attack on the Captain in any way. He is who he is and the team has flourished during his tenure. However, I would guess that most of us over the years have hoped to see Anze play with a bit more aggression and use his size more effectively. But I said the award was irrelevant, not Kopitar.

Now on one hand, Kopi deserves that Byng Trophy this season as any for his overall performance. On the other hand, that horrendous January-February stretch earlier this year cost him his value points and made some of us fans, myself included, wonder if he still has the goods to run it back for one more year or so since he's definitely past his prime and gotten visibly slower when he was on the ice. If Kopi still desires to play, maybe next year would be his last full season as a player because it seems he might want to spend more time with his family at this point in his career, and I wouldn't be surprised when that time comes that his body will finally tell him to lace up his skates for good.

I posted somewhere about this a while back, couldn’t say when or where, but it’s a double edged sword. You cannot hate on him for taking so very few penalties, but his lack of ‘aggression’ and physicality has always been a bit vexing. On the flip side, I suspect that same lack of physicality has everything to do with his longevity, and ability to still contribute even in the waning stages of his career.

I know, I know, I just felt like shedding some light on the situation since I know the general consensus re: Kopitar and his Byng "Ladies".

I mean, look at the past winners. *A lot* of key players for Cup winning teams out there in the mix.

I just feel like dissing Lady Byng award in particular is such a toxic masculinity/immature teenage "tough boy" act lol. Nobody cheers because the society likes tough guys who fight on the ice, play dirty and then they maybe smack their wife at home, too, but nobody cares about that eh. 🤷‍♂️
