Glenn for the butterfly images are you using a Macro lens or a standard telephoto? I have been playing around with using the telephoto on the close up setting of my wife's camera hoping to get that effect. (Also I would like to save the 5-600 and not buy a macro lens with a little one around...too much glass)

I used a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with a 12mm extension tube behind it to decrease its minimum focusing distance.

A set of extension tubes (mine are from Promaster) are a comparatively inexpensive way to turn any lens into a macro. Check your local camera shop or try any number of online camera supply sites and you should be able to find a set for around $175. Mount one between the camera body and your lens and you can get right up on top of any subject to fill the frame and still be able to focus.

Just don't do that with poisonous snakes!

Also, those images are crops of the full frame.

I don't have a macro lens. I like the way my extension tubes work. The 50mm lens is tack-sharp at f8 with extension tubes behind it, and so is the 24-70mm. No need to spend that kinda dough.

I wouldn't mind having a reversing ring like Puckmonkey talked about during the photo challenges, though.
 


Haven't posted in a while. Been rather busy. I found a little hornets nest under an eve of my house, found it slightly ironic that I lit it with an Alien Bee strobe ;) Not at all fantastic, but I have been so remiss in this thread that I thought I should post something.

And yes, I need a set of tubes :)

Speaking of tubes... that's a hell of a scary shot. Nice one.

BTW, a good macro lens doesn't have to cost a fortune. Tamron 90mm/2.8 is superb, and you can find it in great used condition for around $300 or less. The "plastic fantastic" can be had for I think around $150 new, or definitely around $100 used.

I went to this Cultural Dance program the other night. Fun stuff!!
 
So, looking to get into this whole scene. Been messing around for some time with your standard digital camera and I figure it's time to upgrade. No better time than when paycuts and layoffs are going on after all right?

Anyway, I'm looking for some entry level stuff to get started with and I've been seeing a lot (in this thread and others) about the XSi being a good starter. So, looking around and saw this one on ebay and I wanted to see if you guys thought it was a good deal for a "starter package". Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

Its the newest in Simi-Pro technology and the 2 lenses listed with the kit are top notch glass. I own both lenses but my 55-200 is VR. That Canon listed is over a year and a half old whereas the D5000 was released just last month.

The D5000 body itself was rated #1 in PopPhoto and American Photo in the simi-pro category just last month.

If you're a Canon guy then ignore the link.

I know very little about Nikon, but I would guess that while two of the lenses are OK, the rest of the stuff is utter crap and/or crap you don't need. As someone new to DSLR's, keep this in mind: lenses are a FAR more important part of the photography equation than the camera body. There's no point in getting a good body without good lenses, you might as well stay with a point and shoot. The body may last you a couple of years, good glass may last a couple of decades - or more.

Food for thought...

Appreciate the link. I'm not a slave to any brand really. I've used Canon's all my life, but that's just because there are so many and they're the most popular. I've heard great things about the Nikon's as well.

Having said that, a couple other questions.

1. What is the better technology giving me in that camera? Or, in the alternative, where is a solid review/information page that I can read up on for myself?
2. This would be an even better deal on the same camera/lenses then yes? Looks like it's the same thing, but you get another lens with it. Fore less money even.
 
I'd go for the camera with the canon kit lens and then look at a telephoto later.

that being said... the D5000 is packed with a few more features, such as the HD video, and the swivel screen. I'd go that route, just for that, (besides the fact that I shoot with Nikon....).

Also, +1 on the 18-55 lens included in the kit. That lens is money.


Oh... and the Nikon is a year newer... so that is why it has more features.
