The sun is starting to peek through the clouds.

Following what’s been a rather dark and gloomy 48 hours in Los Angeles since Drew Doughty suffered a serious ankle injury, life will somewhat get back to normal with an afternoon affair in Ontario. Despite being down their best defenseman and one of the key locker room leaders, the Kings will press on the only way they know how — by getting back to work. And who better to face in a situation like this than your crosstown rival?

For more on the Doughty situation see here.

The message in the room is simple: Every single individual will have to contribute to make up for the absence of Doughty. With the Anaheim Ducks coming to Ontario for an exhibition matchup this afternoon, there will be an opportunity to see which defensemen will step up and take charge. While Mikey Anderson is not expected to play — meaning coach Jim Hiller won’t be tipping his hand just yet — it will still provide an opportunity for the organization to further evaluate players like Brandt Clarke and Jordan Spence, especially on the power play.

Today will also mark the preseason debut of Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe, a key milestone with less than two weeks to go before opening night.

Statistically Speaking

— Alex Turcotte and Andre Lee, who started the first two preseason games, will both sit this one out.

— Jack Studnicka will be suiting up for his first Kings game. A 6-foot-1 center with 107 games of NHL experience (mostly with Boston and Pittsburgh), he signed a two-way deal this summer and is expected to be with AHL Ontario this coming season. This won’t be his first time inside Toyota Arena, though, as he visited a few times last season while playing for the San Jose Barracuda. Studnicka even scored a pair of goals there in a wild 8-2 loss to the Reign back in late February.
