As quickly as it began, it’s nearly over.

Saturday marks the final exhibition contest for LA before they head to Buffalo for opening night next Thursday. Before the focus officially shifts to the regular season, the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers will pay a visit to the Kings temporary home in Quebec City.

Coming off a 4-1 victory on Thursday over Boston — a game in which coach Jim Hiller iced nearly his entire Game 1 lineup — LA will look to complete their preseason slate undefeated in regulation. They hold a 4-0-1 mark thus far, and although the record and scores don’t matter yet, the team has looked rather promising throughout training camp. A new system, along with new personnel, have offered a totally different look compared to previous seasons.

Shifting focus to an individual players, Quinton Byfield was tabbed by many as an x-factor coming into this season, as the young forward makes his move from wing to center. If his play throughout the preseason transfers into next week and beyond, LA has a star in the making. Not only did he score a hat trick on Thursday vs. Boston, but he’s also taken the reins on the center position, as well as become a factor on the power play and penalty kill. Undoubtably, this will give Hiller’s group a boost, and potentially allows Anze Kopitar to ratchet back his minutes a bit, rather than have to put in such a heavy workload on a night-to-night basis.

Any of the three players still fighting for jobs could see action tonight: Sammy Fagemo, Jack Studnicka, or Caleb Jones.

In the case of Andre Lee, he seems to have done enough to impress already:

Statistically Speaking

— In the absence of Drew Doughty, forward Adrian Kempe wore one of the team’s alternate captain letters vs. the Bruins on Thursday. Mikey Anderson had served as alternate captain twice previoulsy during preseason and Hiller wasn’t shy in saying he needed more from his young defenseman here. Whichever player wears the letter tonight could serve as a sneak preview of who will have it on opening night.

— Watch out for the shortie! Playing a more aggressive penalty kill during camp, the Kings have already recorded two shorthanded goals during the preseason.
