Hiller gets multiyear Extension

Very insight answer from Rod.

I have no idea if Hiller is capable of leading this group to a Cup but he certainly adds some stability to a rocky situation. From questions about management to firing the last head coach, making a 3 year commitment to an internal promotion gives the appearance that the answers are already in-house.

Really curious if Hiller just gets one hire in DJ Smith or if Blake lets him pick both his assistants.
Obviously this offseason will be very telling. If they don't let quite a few players walk and bring up Clarke, Thomas & Turcotte while making some other additions, it tells me it's more of the same. And who knows if all 3 of those guys will make a significant impact? I also think that playing the same style again won't get them anywhere. This team needs to evolve but I'm not confident that will happen. I won't be going to 30 games next season if it just looks like more of the same.

Bright idea Blake strikes again.

This team is crying out for an up and coming, think out of the box type leader, not a 1-3-1 establishment dinosaur.

I hate to say it, but if the Ducks can make a couple solid FA signings this year I can see them surpassing us. We are in cap hell with no #1 goaltender, losing Arvidsson and Roy, and the only players you can see taking a step up would be QB, and maybe Clarke and Spence, maybe.

Lots of potential players to regress at the same time unfortunately, think it's going to be a long season.
Lots of talk already this offseason about moving away from the 1-3-1, so I don’t expect it to be the default setting next year. Not going to sweat the system until I see it.

If the roster has that many issues, then it doesn’t matter who the new coach is anyway. But if it as bad as you say, much better to burn out this current vision on a retread than bring in a Gallant and not have the right roster for him.

On the flipside, since this team cannot be mistaken for a Cup Contender right now, then you also don’t need a Gallant to put them over the edge.

What’s the reality? A better roster than you are saying, but on par with what many others are saying: a slightly above average team who can make the playoffs but isn’t dangerous. And yet this is the team Blake has been building, so Hiller is the only logical choice. There’s not a ton of room for wholesale changes and teams who make the playoffs three years in a row don’t burn it all down and start a rebuild. Sorry - don’t care who ownership is. That doesn’t get the greenlight anywhere.

So you adjust, you move on from players who no longer serve a purpose, and you bring in young talent. You had also better upgrade LD or a top 6 wing. Provided Danault is the 3rd line center next year, i like our bottom 6 more than in recent years. Laf won’t hold back Phil’s production the way he will PLD’s.

Next year Turcotte and Thomas and Clarke are all on the team. An absolute waste of time to think otherwise barring one gets traded. This past season Q broke out and Laf and Spence cut their teeth. Next season Lee and Helenius are likely towering on the third line. The season after that a decent chance Ziemmer is up. Portillo will be up. Pinelli and Dvorak might be up too if they develop properly.

There is still a path right now to keep moving forward while bringing up lots of young talent and making a couple solid UFA signings. It is a path that can use a coach already familiar with the organization and pipeline. A bigger name and Bright Idea Blake is chasing the next shiny object.

seems we're in some kinda black hole where half the angry online fan base won't rest until the guillotine is brought out, me being one of them. or they can just get fired that's cool too i guess but yeah.. i don't see and haven't seen success in this regimen and i'll be glad when.. if.. ever.. it's over and we can move on from of the 90s bro squad management.

I wanted TMAC gone because the team was simply f'kd at that point of the firing and we all knew it was coming. I wanted fresh blood brought in. I'm not sure Hiller necessarily did anything better/different, or if the break was all the Kings needed and maybe they were just gassed. I liked Tmac's personality more... Hiller seemed out of his league in the playoffs and especially with lines and player management I think and I'm all for a coach gaining experience but not when we're "supposed contenders (lol)".. but we're not so I guess this is par for the course. I watched TMac's interviews I skipped most of Hilldawgs. At the same time I think Hiller did certain things a little different like changing up the loser Overtime squads and adjusting the 1-3-1 a bit on the fly in certain playoff games.. it's difficult. I'm not against him.. but I think.. the team is kinda screwed for awhile no matter regardless of the head coach :D
I'm taking the approach of just keeping my expectations low. As the team sits now, regardless of coach, I don't see a cup contender. If PLD somehow turns things around in season 2, we pick up a quality winger to replace Arvy and the 3 kids coming up from Ontario contribute, we'll be in better shape. Still not convinced that will make them contenders though...going to need a lot of guys to be better.

4. Hiller on getting more from PL Dubois:

I don’t think PL was was happy with the season. I think he’s got more. That will be my job to connect with him through the summer. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him. He left for the World Championships right away and he’s playing very well. When he gets back, we’ll have a conversation. I’ve already gone into some of the video, watching him play. When you get this kind of time, you can dig in a little bit deeper. I see some statistics we’ve gathered too. He’s a player that when he’s entering the offensive zone with the puck, he’s one of our most efficient players at creating offense. But digging into it deeper, he didn’t have enough opportunities to enter the zone with the puck. Why is that? We have to get him more opportunities to enter that blue line with the puck. How do we do that? How does he do that? That’s a process that we’ll work through this summer — through video, through talking. I’m sure he’ll translate some of that on the ice. What I do know is that he’s a really good player and he wants to be a really good player. We’ll have a summer where we get a chance to work together; he’ll come back and be a good player next year. Again, I know that.

Ok this is actually very encouraging. Hiller actually talking about something other than the usual coach speak. Zone entries and zone exits are two of the key reasons the Kings sucked last season. Hiller willing to do something to address those areas of need while acknowledging what Dubois is good at seems like a big positive.

Yes. I think statistically, PLD was the Kings' best player in zone entries with possession.

A positive I agree, just not sure how big it will end up being.

What I did not hear during the presser was how they were going to fix the zone entries, when our 80% of the time the LHD can only flop the puck out of the zone and hope for a tip-in to negate the icing. I heard nothing about updating personnel, only we need to figure out how to get better with the players he has. That is more of a negative than any positive I can glean from his other statements.

Well there's not much else he can say. He can't make trades. Hopefully the addition of Clarke will help a lot. He's a terrific passer and really feels the game well.

1. They can’t get into too many specifics re: system because they don’t know what they are doing yet. It’s not hard to believe them saying they are going to look at everything.

2. Kings are top of the league in goals against. Can’t blame anyone for wanting to maintain that.

3. I am concerned that they still won’t allow their most creative players enough freedom, and that systems will still overrule free-lancing just a bit too much, and this will continue to hold back the power play.

4. I am glad Hiller mentioned getting to the net and Blake articulating the physical price it takes to get there.

5. I am very glad Bernstein pushed Blake on PLD not lacking not just in points but in effort, and Blake strongly agreed.

6. I like that Blake said previously they would look very deeply at the 1-3-1. I don’t like that today Hiller said some teams in the Finals right now are using it.

7. I appreciate that they value grit and being hard to play against. When Blake started he emphasized speed and skill, downplayed size, and his built the roster accordingly. This disconnect between what they seem to think the team is vs. what it actually is bothers me.

8. Addendum to last point. If game 4 is what Hiller meant by close, and getting to the net and can be the difference, then yes that’s a good template. And yes that’s showing grit.

9. No one mentioned a Christmas party. Nice.

My problem is they did not shy away from talking about it. Hiller could have given vague answers, said we are going to look at everything in order to get better. He did not say that. He said we will see what we can do with what we have. They have a team built (on the backend) to play the 1-3-1, but that cannot generate any offense from said backend. Rinse Repeat.....

How many times did Todd talk / preach about checking. How much good did that do?

Yes. I think statistically, PLD was the Kings' best player in zone entries with possession.

isn't PLD's "on paperness" how we got here in the first place?

i jest of course because we're stuck and f***ed with the guy for 7 more years might as well have fun
