@Statue4Deano I really don't see him getting a deal below 5. I'll be curious to see if this pans out like you see it. But if he makes it all the way to UFA without knowing there's interest as a top pair dman he should fire his agent. This is his chance to cash in and someone is going to do it. I get what you're saying about it being a deep class but realistically how many of them are moving on. The number one biggest reason for Roy to move on though is he knows he will always be second fiddle to Doughty here.
This is a good question. I think we're mostly not delusional. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for management..

Like it or not the West goes through Edmonton as long as McDavid and Draisaitl are together.
Kings can be a contender even against Edmonton. They must fix their defensive personnel. Adding Clarke is 50% of the fix. Adding a left shot who can move the puck out of the zone cleanly is the other 50%.
Secondly they need to generate more offense. Fixing the defense will help. But they still need more production from every forward on the roster. Even Kempe and Fiala. Best way to do this is a change in the primary offensive scheme.
If they can fix the blue line and figure out a way to score more goals with the forwards they’ve got then yes the Kings are a contender. Will they do these things? Probably not but I’ll be watching anyway.

Isn't this the season in which Blake stated (years ago) the Kings would be contenders? Totally agree with your points. It's time for this team's management to put up or get out.
There was a rumor that Pitts was interested in Kaliyev. Would love to flip him for Pickering, if so, as he would slot in well as a puck moving LD with size (though I don't believe he is very physical).

If the Kings are no longer going to be a playoff team, then I agree bring up Clarke for the season. He needs to learn how to not get manhandled by NHL players. I just don't want him to be injured for most of the season as he won't get that playing time. I hope the Kings management starts to focus on bringing in some decent physical players

He's played in 4 RS games this season and proved nothing so far. He's not their playoff joker. What makes Shane so confident that he's a steal?
IMO Moverare is a better bet for our long term LD need due to his bigger frame and AHL success.
The sad fact is just that TB hit a development plateau very early on in his career and failed to crack an NHL lineup that needed a 3rd pairing LD with good puck moving skills badly. It's not like the Kings tried to make him into an enforcer.
That made his trade value zero and I doubt the Kings would be able to cash anything in on him, considering Vegas put him on waivers shortly after claiming him, too.

Blake should have traded Roy at the deadline…knows he can’t resign him and has Spence/Clarke in the wings. Another example of Blake bungling asset management.
At a minimum he could have flipped him for a lhd prospect and now gets nothing. Really- it encapsulates his tenure as GM.

That's a byproduct of Blake thinking this team could go farther in the playoffs. He wasn't willing to trade assets when the reality was that things were very likely going to play out the way they did. And I think him making this type of trade at the deadline would have been waiving he white flag, probably not something he was willing to do, especially when you are trying to sell playoff tickets. Absolute miss if you are pretty sure you weren't going to sign him in the off season.

Trading Roy at the deadline would have been a huge F U to the entire team. "You guys suck, we don't trust you, you're gonna lose anyway and we're giving up on you." Horrible, horrible message to send which will poison your team not just this season but for years. Teams going into the playoffs add players, never subtract. Name one team in the last five years which was in playoff position and traded away a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman for picks at the deadline. Even a top 9 forward or top 6 defenseman. It's not done. There's a reason for that.

I’d say that last bit sums up why Roy doesn’t exactly fit the Kings current blue line. His value is maximized playing next to a d-man who produces offense. The Kings don’t have anyone like that to pair him with unless you want Doughty to play on the left side for the first time in his 15 year career.more about Roy and his potential market worth here:

In theory, I guess, you could play him on the left with Spence and trade Gavrikov in order to afford Roy. Or move MA down and have Roy play with DD. In theory. I wouldn't do it, I don't know that he's ever played on the left side.

Will say this much, I agree this team with its current roster is still better than what it produced last year given some adjustments like you’ve said. And if they manage to somehow win a round or two over the next two years then they don’t need to be a contender now. That’s a great scenario for the young kids to develop and the older players alike to lift some spirits.
