Yes, he definitely stepped up his game. And when a player's game shows significant improvement in the playoffs, you have to sit up and take notice. I can't think of one other King who played better in the playoffs. And he still only 23, which is so young for a defenseman. Willie Mitchell and Rob Scuderi didn't even have a regular NHL job until 25-26. Spence is likely to keep improving for several more years and has skills you just can't teach.
 
It is far more important for the Kings to get a big, tough lefty on defense than it is to retain Roy.
Letting Roy walk also allows the Kings to insert Clarke into the NHL. Clarke will struggle at times but he needs to start playing.
While I am not entirely sold on Spence, I did feel he had a pretty decent playoff series. And getting a partner to play with Spence will help his growth.
 
There were times I thought that Roy would make a better defensive bottom two line forward than a defenseman... I know it's the old school coconut snatch technique but it works more times than it failed... It might be the only reason to keep Roy in...but the cap screams otherwise... What we do need is a Brown clone up front to punish anyone willing to touch the puck near him...

I'd be surprised if Edmonton could afford him beyond, perhaps, next season. They may be going all in on next season though given the team will look significantly different the following season with Drai and Bouchard due for significant raises.

A 1 year prove it deal for Arvidsson makes a lot of sense for both sides. Oilers have about $15M in cap space next season once they send down Jack Campbell.

Which team is going to give Arvidsson term coming off a 2nd back surgery over about 18 months? The Kings sure won’t.

The cap goes up next summer. Arvidsson playing in the top 6 behind McDavid is the best opportunity he’ll get to put up stats and prove he can stay healthy.

Yeah, they'll likely make other moves, will be interesting to see if they can build the same chemistry they had this season with whomever they add.

Maybe Arvy is the new market inefficiency. He could be some team’s designated Mark Stone. Sign him to a nice contract, and immediately put him on LTIR until the playoffs start.

Agreed but if Arvy is willing to accept a 1 year prove it deal then the Kings might be foolish not to lock him down themselves.

From the exit interviews Arvy talked about the strategy he and his agent used re his injury in preseason where the goal was to have surgery and come back and show he was healthy. The blip on his first return after just a couple games delayed that. But the intent all along was to prove he was OK, which appeared to be the case by the end of the year. All of this was of course about his expiring contract and getting a new one.
The question is how does the hockey world view his injury history?
I’ve said all along that Arvy is a unique player with the Kings. He can play on any line, he’s active, takes lots of shots, and is right handed.
I think he’s very difficult to replace.

I wouldn’t doubt the Kings would offer a one year deal for 2-3M. I think other teams would also. But, are there teams willing to give him a multi-year deal?

Based on his play at the end of the year and his ability, I would probably offer a two-year deal with a hit of $3M. Risky of course. But a real upside. But I don’t think Arvy would accept that.
