Playing in their second contest of a season-high seven game road trip, the LA Kings failed to hold a one-goal lead and lost in overtime to the Boston Bruins Saturday at TD Garden.

After a scoreless first period, Trevor Moore (1) put the Kings on the board at 5:22 in the second period, just seconds after an LA power play expired. Quinton Byfield (2) and Phillip Danault (1) assisted on the goal.

Elias Lindholm (2) tied the game later in the second after one-timing a long rebound off a Brad Marchand (2) shot while skating 4-on-4.

Later, at 3:07 of overtime, Bruins legend David Pastrnak took advantage of a tired Kings unit and snuck behind the defense to snap home the game winning goal.

Kings starter Darcy Kuemper (1-0-1, 1.47 GAA, .948 SV%) stopped 23 of 25 shots and has not allowed a 5-on-5 goal against in the two games he’s played to start the season.

First of Moore to Come: It took just two games for Moore to score his first goal of the season after leading the Kings last season with 31 goals. On Saturday, the 29-year-old forward led all skaters with seven shots on goals, while also recording two hits and 65% Corsi-For at all strengths.

Penalty Killers: The Kings remain perfect on the penalty kill; they stymied another five power plays on Saturday. Head coach Jim Hiller commented after the game about the bad string of penalties taken, as they’ve faced five shorthanded moments in each of the first two contests. Even so, the PK group has been led by Vladislav Gavrikov and Joel Edmundson, who’ve seen an average of 5:48 and 5:01 of shorthanded time on ice (TOI), respectively.

In Doughty’s Absence: With two games in the books and a void among the team’s blueline contingent, Hiller has leaned on his veteran defenders to eat up heavier minutes. Against the Bruins, Gavrikov (23:16 TOI), Mikey Anderson (22:09 TOI), and Edmundson (19:58 TOI) answered the call.

Q is for Quinton: Byfield picked up his second assist in as many games with a heady pass through a seam on the man-advantage. After the game, the 6-foot-5 centerman told the assembled media he wanted to improve on a poor start to his game last Thursday against the Sabres. In that game, he had the lowest even-strength Corsi on his team at 27.5 CF% (8-21). Byfield rebounded with a 58.1 CF% (13-8) in Boston while working on a mild points streak.

Up Next: It will be more matinee hockey for Hiller and the Kings when they face off against the Ottawa Senators on Monday at 10:00 AM Pacific Time at Canadian Tire Centre.

Kings will take tomorrow off (allowing players to focus on their fantasy football teams)… Then, another matinee vs. the Sens on Monday afternoon.

Assuming Thomas draws in. And if they want to avoid playing an all rookie / inexperienced line, it won't be for 61. x.com
