Just when Kings coach Jim Hiller probably thought it was safe to check the scoreboard again, his team fell apart late and turned a two-goal third period lead into a 4-3 shootout loss on home ice Saturday afternoon.

The Kings had won 38 straight home games when entering the 3rd period with a multi-goal lead before Saturdays shootout loss to Chicago

If you’re looking for positives, sure, LA salvaged a point out of the game. However, coupled with an embarrassing 4-2 loss at San Jose earlier in the week, that’s three points total that Hiller was likely counting on to pad his team’s early season bank account.

It also wasted a two-goal game from Alex Laferriere, who continues to lead the team in goals with eight (and recorded the first power play tally of his career). Equally important was Phil Danault getting his first goal of the season — coming 12 games into the 2024-25 campaign.

Darcy Kuemper still hasn’t lost in regulation (3-0-3), yet his third period was not impressive vs. Chicago, compounded by an even worse run in the shootout. Although numbers for the night will show he stopped just 18 of 27 shots in the game (.857 save percentage), he allowed three goals on 11 shots in the final frame of regulation — and then allowed three straight Blackhawks skaters to score on him during the shootout.

In several statistical categories the Kings played a solid game. They went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill, lead the way in faceoffs (winning 65%), and outshot the Blackhawks 40-21.

It didn’t lead them to victory, though, and that will be the lasting impression.
