Continuing an opening season swing through the north east, the Kings dropped into Canadian Tire Centre to take on the Ottawa Senators for a Monday matinee.

Los Angeles held a two-goal advantage twice in the game and ultimately fell in overtime 8-7 courtesy of Senators forward Josh Norris.

Kevin Fiala (2) started the scoring for LA 8:12 in the opening period with a power play one-timer and finished with two goals, along with a pair of tallies from Alex Laferriere (2). Adrian Kempe (1) had a goal and an assist.

Trevor Lewis (1) placed his body in front of the net and deflected a shot from Alex Turcotte, who picked up his first point of the season.

Newcomer Tanner Jeannot (1) buried his first as an LA King to force overtime with 5:34 remaining in regulation. Jeannot scored 24 goals in his rookie year three seasons ago with the Nashville Predators.

Captain Anze Kopitar and Brandt Clarke both collected three assists each – all on the power play. It was the 21-year-old’s homecoming return to Ottawa, where he played in front of 30+ family and friends for the first time. Clarke also looked to score a goal which was later overturned for goaltender interference.

Despite scoring seven goals, the Kings faced a defensive collapse stemmed from a penalty kill that allowed four goals on six opportunities. Leading into Monday’s game, LA was a perfect 10-for-10 on the PK and was highlighted as a bright spot in the early goings of the road trip.

Starting his third consecutive game to begin the season, goaltender Darcy Kuemper faced 41 shots and surrendered eight goals against for the first time in his 12-season NHL career.

Growing Pains: With 11 new regulars on a 23-man roster, head coach Jim Hiller has his hands full in LA. On one hand, the seven goals-for prove the offensive systems and capabilities are able; however, a glance at the defensive column spotlights room for improvement on the PK with a measly 33% success rate in Ottawa to go along with the loss of two, two-goal leads that slipped away.

Points on the Road: The Kings faced the tall task of starting seven-in-a-row on the road to begin the season. Three games in, LA has collected four of a possible six points (.667) to keep pace with the Pacific Division leaders, despite losing consecutive games in which they’ve led in.

Season Debuts Upcoming?: With a back-to-back on the docket and players sitting on the shelf, rookie Akil Thomas and veteran David Rittich are still looking for their first minutes of the 2024-25 campaign. Hiller opted to run the same lineup to begin all three games of the season, and should any lineup adjustments occur, look for one (or both) to slot in.

Up Next: Kings continue their eastern swing with visits to Toronto on Wednesday at 4:30 pm Pacific Time and Montreal Thursday at 4:00 pm Pacific Time. Both games can be viewed on Ballys Sports West.
