Kempe Contract Watch Thread

In a growing cap world there's lots of arguments for a player to try and reset their cap at least once instead of the 8 years. Hard to say how all these guys will do it but for sure the kings better not be pulling any bullshit about his goal numbers having ENG's in them. That means you trusted that guy to be out there in the last minute.
If Byfield scored an empty net in game 4 I’d be ready to give him 10 million dollars.

Kempe should be an easy resign.
The cap is going up.

Two years at $12mil.
Two years at $11mil.
Two years at $10mil.
Two years at $9mil.

$84mil hit.

Get it done Holland, I was pissed when you didn't offer Gavri enough.

If the Kings are balking at 10M X 8 (80M total pre-tax value) the rationale is most likely based on the assumption that no other team would offer him a contract worth 80M pre-tax (11.43M X 7).

What if Kempe signs with a team with no state income tax like Seattle? Then Seattle only has to offer 9.9M X 7 to hit roughly the same total value of a 80M contract with the Kings.

Would Seattle offer Kempe 9.9 x 7. I think so.

I really hope Holland and Luc aren’t playing chicken with Kempe.

I think there are several teams that would offer him the $10m AAV price without hesitation. The fact that the Kings are allegedly not one of them is disturbing, if true.

I'm not particularly concerned about this. If Pagnotta's reporting is correct, there isn't even much of a gap money-wise. Perhaps term is a different issue.

I don't see how you don't pay him when the President of the organization described him as a "superstar" at the beginning of the offseason.

Habs, Senators, Bruins, Devils, Rangers or Islanders immediately come to mind… I think even Tampa would be tempted.
Great list. I'd also add: Colorado, Carolina, Chicago, San Jose, Philly, Anaheim, Seattle, Utah, Columbus, Vancouver, Calgary and even Edmonton (contingent on some of those teams being able to clear the cap space to do it).

Goalies aren't great comps for skaters, but Dustin Wolf, based on one solid season just got 7x7.5m. There's much more value in lower priced goalies too, you can find another goalie often for cheap, but not another Kempe.

If the Kings think Kempe will sign for less than 10m he will walk.

Wolf couldn’t have played better for a rookie and it’s scary to think how good he could get.

But wow that’s a risky extension after one season. They must fear he’d be looking for 10+ in two years if he signed a bridge this summer.

Makes the Petersen contract seem almost reasonable.😁

At these high value target numbers, the onerous California tax climate becomes more significant as above. It would certainly represent a negotiating factor. Sign him, don't pretend there's another Kings forward who backs off an NHL defense.

With the increase in the upper limit of the cap the tax implications aren’t nearly the hinderance they are under a flat cap.

I don't think stupid extensions that everyone laughs at are "setting the market". Or are they??

It seems QB is an outright steal even if he stagnates...

All the reason to sign him. He wants to stay in LA. This past off season we've seen that top FA talent didn't seem to want to come to LA. Home grown talent needs to be paid because the alternative is (way) over paying to replace him.
Kings really need to find another center too, if Kopi is seriously considering retirement. Someone to compliment (play behind) QB.
