I do think 3 yrs in a row of cap increases makes determining new market value tricky. OTH that should make paying Kempe 10M that much easier to go along with - it’s actually a totally fair ask by his agent right off the bat.
I do wonder if McDavid is holding up the Eichel and Kaprizov deals somewhat. He’s setting the ceiling, but how much of a discount is he going to take since he wants to win and knows 20M a year will hurt team depth?
One of the sillier and more unfortunate results of the hard cap is that the best player in the world needs to sign under market value if he wants to win a Cup. And other players have to weigh that too to an extent.

Frank Seravalli is reporting Kaprizov rejected 8 year X 16M contract extension.
Not sure what kind of impact Kaprizov going to free agency would have on Kempe but it would certainly mean Minnesota is in the market for a winger.

What was reported is that next year's 104M cap was going to go up even more. If 104 becomes 109, players could be losing out on some $. If this is the case, why rush?

This was THG's take on it; that Kaprizov might value the desire to play for a Cup over length of contract. In other words, he might not want to be locked into a long-term situation, if he feels the team is not going to contend.

That was my first thought when I heard the news in my car today. That was a big middle finger to the organization’s future. But a 3-4 year contract means the AAV goes down, not up. Hard to explain walking away from that kind of deal…

The Wild have a great pipeline with impactful young players already on the roster now. They were very competitive with him on the roster, but became a bubble team without him. Maybe he doesn’t believe in the team.

Historically Panarin has shown he is all about the money. Why sign a long-term contract, therein leaving money on the table, if he feels he is healthy, has a lot more years ahead of him in the game and believes in himself?
In my opinion, it's all about maximizing his income and get top dollar through his entire career, to him.
But you could very well be right. Gav historically chased the money and maximum contact too, until he didn't with this last one - prioritizing location and teammates over max value. Would be "Wild" if Panarin did the same.

Vilardi just got 7.5 Mil for 6 years from Winnipeg. That seems a tad steep for an injury prone second line center no? Kempe has gotta be looking at north of 10 per now right? Crazy money getting thrown around this year.

It’s just a crazy story about Kaprizov turning down the richest contract in league history. Reportedly Guerin has now asked his agent for his trade list.
It’s felt pretty sad to be a Kings fan every spring for the last decade. But this is a sad day to be a Wild fan. If he does land in NYR, I see a pretty top-heavy team with contracts that still doesn’t beat FL.
