The post Kevin Fiala’s Injury Has Elias Pettersson On The Kings’ Radar appeared first on NHL Trade Talk.
Every NHL team’s worst nightmare at the Olympics came true for the Los Angeles Kings with Kevin Fiala’s leg injury against Team Canada. Fiala’s injury caused him to be taken off the ice on a stretcher and undergo surgery in Italy. The injury will keep him out for the rest of the regular season, which isn’t ideal after the team improved its roster by acquiring Artemi Panarin before the break. The Kings might now be shifting their plans toward an Elias Pettersson trade with the Vancouver Canucks.
Pettersson’s time in Vancouver hasn’t gone extremely well. He underwent some public scrutiny last year after a rocky relationship with JT Miller, and his play hasn’t been up to par over the past few seasons. The media pressure is sometimes unbearable in Vancouver, and the Swedish superstar might be looking for a fresh start. It makes sense both from a hockey perspective and in his personal life, according to Ben Kuzma, via The Province.
The only question would be what Pettersson’s market would look like.
The Canucks want a center in return for Pettersson, and the Kings aren’t deep at that position. Kuzma believes that Quinton Byfield fits the Canucks’ ask, but Los Angeles will never give up such a young talent for the inconsistent center.
Artemi Panarin Kings trade
The idea of slotting Pettersson alongside Panarin is appealing for a playoff run, but the Kings need to be realistic with what the Swede will bring. Los Angeles doesn’t want to waste Anze Kopitar’s last season, and they have the space to improve the team. It’ll be an intriguing story to monitor as the trade deadline is approaching quickly once the NHL season resumes.
Los Angeles isn’t strikingly better this season than the teams from the past few years that haven’t been able to get past the Edmonton Oilers in the first round. Panarin helps the offense, but he still doesn’t turn them into a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. The first concern for the Kings will be improving the team enough to even earn a playoff spot, as they currently sit three points behind the second wild card position.

“[The Kings] interest in Elias Pettersson increased with the Swede’s two-goal game Saturday for Sweden in the Olympics, plus the Kings have $15 million in cap space. And winger Andrei Kuzmenko thrived with the Canucks in 2022-23 with a 39-goal season while mostly aligned with Pettersson, who put up 102 points. A change of scenery and not being front-page news in laid-back Los Angeles might pique his interest in a trade. His wife also lived there for 13 years.”
The only question would be what Pettersson’s market would look like.
