Kings Fire Hiller

its simply not unusual is the point, what's unusual is Tampa's longevity with Cooper or even Pittsburgh's with Sullivan. Todds run with the kings and Sutters run were both long by modern NHL standards. Whats also unusual is having a 20 year run with one team. The cap era is only 20 years old so it's hard to generate historical norms out of that. I will concede it would be best if there was one coach and core players supported them for a decade plus, but the idea that it's a norm is a fiction.
It’s not so much about the frequency of coaching changes. My comment was about the circumstances surrounding the many changes we have seen since the Lombardi years began in 2006. Usually, the coach, management and players are all to blame when it’s obvious the team has quit, there is an obvious conflict, or the message falls on deaf ears somewhere in the chain.

Sometimes the coach and management are in conflict. Still, sometimes the coach is the problem by himself. Crawford was a bad hire. Everyone could see it. But since Marc was fired, it seems the players’ on ice performances have been the greatest deciding factor in who stands behind the bench. Danault was this year’s prime example.

We have all seen that players quitting on a coach gets ugly, and it’s happened 5 times in the last 14 years. That’s all I am saying. Everyone can draw their own conclusions. My conclusion is that management needs to be more observant of the obvious, make better personnel decisions, and hold the players accountable for winning.

The current team core has quit on 2 coaches. Kopi and Drew have their own history as I pointed out.

Well, if you concentrate on the current core...McLellan lasted 4,5 seasons, which is above average. Hiller was a rookie HC promoted from within and Rob foolishly gave him a 3 year contract, which backfired after it became apparent he isn't fit to be a head coach in the modern NHL. He seems like someone that could do well back in the day of no cap with a stacked team with clear cut hierarchy of proven vets with immaculate on-ice leadership and a track record of linemate chemistry, where he would be able to roll mostly 3 obvious lines/pairings and occasionally send out a goon line, playing trap game and trying to suffocate the opponent...and not worry about deciding when to challenge a ref's call.

He often seems very clueless with his line shuffling, his pressers are woeful, he seems very uncharismatic, has seemingly no authority and is likely bad at handling the communication with the players (similarly bad as he is handling the press).

I don't think "the core" (whoever that encompasses) was unreasonable to "quit" on a coach like this. The pressure to succeed is big and Hiller seemingly mishandled many situations, can't communicate for s*it and at the same time doesn't seem to have any authority whatsoever.

Most professional collectives have ups and downs, and when the pressure to succeed is high it's only reasonable to replace those who lead and assemble the collective rather than replace half of said collective.

Hiller getting fired mid-season wasn't planned, but the p*ss poor performance of this team in the last 6 games forced Ken's hand to act. In my opinion it's a good sign the team isn't fine with a coach that screams mediocrity, stagnation, spinning tires or whatever you want to call this situation. They can't go out and say out loud "we don't like our coach, we disagree with his coaching philosophy", they know better than that. So silent quitting is the only "hygienic" way to deal with this.

Now whether or not Ken will go with a "soft seller" approach or go "all in" to try and salvage something with DJ at the helm, or something in between...that remains to be seen. It's likely going to be based on how the team responds to the firing.

AI says DJ Smith is a good coach for young players and is a good at instilling confidence in players, so...maybe he finds a way to guide Byfield better than Hiller did and lays a solid foundation for next season without a radically different approach.

Senators were on the rise with him at the helm and then failed to meet the high expectations and he got fired. Perhaps that team was less suited to a defense-first coach than the Kings are, and it's not like Ottawa are now radically better with a different coach. From a much improved season after Smith's firing they are now looking into a bit of a regression again, despite improved roster in comparison and prediction they will be a sure bet playoff team this season. Though it is true the East is brutal this season...

Removing the head coach doesn’t fix anything. It just removes him from the equation. That’s not a fix. That doesn’t solve the problem. It just adds another variable.

It was a necessary change but change for the sake of change is not a fix. Luc has a long history of coaching changes under his watch that speak exactly to that point. Hiller should’ve been removed before the start of this season but again we have incompetent people in charge of the franchise.
I don’t know how you can look at Hiller’s bizarre line juggling & ice time distribution & think this was just a change for changes sake. He’s not the only problem with this team but he’s the biggest one. Most of our young players we don’t really know how good they are because Hiller never put them in position to succeed. The only time he really did well with the lines is when injuries forced him to play certain lineups. But when given the chance he’d just screw up the lines again. He had to go.

i will take the credit for this one guys. i skated at the crypt on 02/27. daryl evans gave us a "state of the club" talk and asked if anyone had a question. i didn't say anything, but i'm pretty sure my "when are you going to fire hiller?" thought was palpable. i woke up 2 days later and boom!

I wish Kopi, Drew, Juice, Mikey and Phil (the core) had gone to Holland before the season and clearly expressed their displeasure with Hiller and their lack of confidence in moving forward with Jim as a coach. Smith’s presser verified these lingering, smoldering problems resulting from last year’s playoff collapse. Maybe they did meet with Holland… but that doesn’t seem to have been the case. Things should have never degenerated into “f***ing coward”.

I went to bed after the second period of the Avs game. And that was one of the better games in recent history. But it was pretty obvious that we were going to lose. Even with the kids making their tre-but we looked overmatched. The Kings roster is old and slow (especially on defense). They have no blue chip skater prospects in the pipeline. So expecting much from the kids who debuted or anyone else under 23 (aside from Clarke) is wishful thinking.

I agree with Deano. This team needs an overhaul from the very top down. Blake was a C+ GM. He made some good moves and bad moves. But he never weaponized cap space (Carolina getting a first for Marleau is the kind of deal he should have made) and was too slow to dump the old vets. And we're seeing the nasty effect of Blake stopping the rebuild prematurely. I mean, we got rid of Hiller (yay!) but still have an aging, immobile defense and most of our top forwards are approaching or over 30. The senior leadership hasn't gotten us a playoff win in 11 years and it looks like winless in 12-14 years is not a crazy expectation.

Agreed and I have to say I had no expectations that they would win against Colorado, but they actually looked a lot like the Kings of old - playing hard each shift, hitting and playing structured hockey. The kids offered a nice addition of speed and the Kings kept up with Colorado well, while finishing their checks.

The Kings defense is very slow, I agree. We need to figure a way to acquire at least 2 mobile defenseman in the offseason, or before the trade deadline, and see if we can part with one of either Edmundson (who has played well this season) or Ceci. The speed of our defense is our biggest weakness.

Others have mentioned trading Kuemper and as much as I like him, it's not a bad idea. That likely only happens if the Kings give up on making the playoffs this season.

On ice leadership needs a full revamp (which likely happens when Kopi retires) and a new President and final determination on HC is needed. Big step in the right direction adding Greene to the coaching staff though.

All in all if we can secure a solid lottery position in the draft, and keep the 1st and 2nd round picks, this team looks pretty hopeful next season. A top 3 pick in this year's draft would turn things around significantly.

Catching up on text messages with a friend and this one from me at the game to him still hits 👊😢
