As expected, the Kings have utilized Long Term Injured Reserve to give themselves a little salary cap breathing room to open the season (and beyond). On Wednesday, LA placed Drew Doughty on LITR to free up the room necessary to recall forward Andre Lee from AHL Ontario.
The timing of the move is more about process and procedure than anything else. On Monday, all NHL teams needed to submit a cap-compliant roster to the league office. At that time, the Kings had 22 active players and less than $600k in cap space available, in addition to Doughty and Arthur Kaliyev on Injured Reserve (IR).
Making the move today allows Lee to practice with the Kings, their final full on-ice session in advance of opening the season on Thursday vs. the Buffalo Sabres.
The #LAKings put Drew Doughty on LTIR when they had $547K Cap Space, allowing them to exceed the $88M cap by $10.45M.
They called up Lee, and now have $10.225M Cap Space remaining in LTIR.https://t.co/GgPjqLmhKc
