***LA Kings @ Colorado Avalanche GDT 3/27/25 7:00pm on ESPN***

Since the Kings started off 11-0-1 on the road last year they have been pitiful away from the Crypt. Not sure what changed. Even during the Terry Murray years they were good on the road.

I couldn’t watch and didn’t see any comments here on Mallot. Can anyone back up if Hiller’s take is reasonable?

On Jeff Malott’s first game with the LA Kings
He was the bright spot in the game for me, I really, really liked his game. Didn’t have a chance to be that physical, which I know is part of his game, but he’s got good hockey sense. Yeah, I really, really liked his game. He was really, really impressive.

Yup, Mallot looked good. Had an early scoring chance in the slot which looked impressive. Did some good work on the boards. Unfortunately, the Avs won almost every battle along the boards last night, and moved the puck quickly out of the zone. The Kings couldn't sustain pressure very often.

I'll say this, Malott did about as good as he could do. Glad he got the game since the rest of the team took the night off. Is he better than Jeannot? No, flat no. But as depth service you need guys like him in the org to be able to step in and show that they can get you through a tough patch. I thought he was great last night and he should be proud of his effort. Would trust him again.

We can call it a scheduled loss all we want but fact of the matter is the Kings were sneaking their way through the first and then the Av's showed just how quickly they could change a game with their talent. Simply put they execute on their chances at a higher rate than the Kings and in a game last night it showed. The remainder of the 3 in 4 B2b is forthcoming, lets hope they were playing 4d chess on it and come away with the points.

Thursday night beer league 10:30pm game type effort from the Kings tonight.
The Kings were sluggish all night. The altitude, maybe? If not, at least it's a good excuse. But at times it looked like we were moving in slow-motion. And we lost 90% of the board battles.

On the other hand, the Avs are a fine-tuned, well-oiled machine. That team will be hard to beat in a seven-game series, that's for sure.

He looked like he had call up jitters the first shift or two.. and then a very prime scoring opportunity, which he failed to capitalize on. No physicality to speak of, at least not to my eyes, and the fact that the score got out of control in the second period really limited the shift count for that 4th line. I would have liked to have seen him go after anyone in an Avs sweater at some point in the second. The Kings desperately needed a wake up call, to be dragged into the fray, and a nice hot blooded tilt might have been just what the doctor ordered. Alas, I saw very little ferocity or aggression, which in my estimation would be 75% of the reason a guy like Malott persists in the modern era of speed and skill hockey. You’ll have to take my observations with a grain of salt though, since I’m not an NHL coach, and Jim Hiller is. I’m just a guy who has obsessively watched hockey for the better part of 30 years, studying the mechanics and nuance of the game, so how could I possibly have any worthwhile input.

P.S. from this point on through the rest of the regular season, every single game against a potential Western Conference playoff opponent should be used to SEND THE MESSAGE.

Appreciate these takes. A trustworthy enough player for spot duty who’s clearly not as good as Jeannot sounds like exactly what I would expect. So I found Hiller’s emphasis interesting.

Like any coach he can be selective in his quotes about different players. Of all games, just from what I read on here, a little odd any player would be made to sound that impressive. Akil still can’t get a game in.

Yeah, his ‘enthusiasm’ about Malott seems more like a Darryl Sutter tactic or mind game to me. Everyone else looked so sh*tty, so let’s praise the grinders like Trevor Lewis for what a great game they played. Feels more like an underhanded complement, to emphasize the fact that everyone else looked like absolute trash, but the journeyman call up produced value equitable to his paycheck.. I guess. Absolutely nothing else to praise, so give the new guy an ‘atta boy’.

I stood up and cheered when Malott had that glorious chance in the slot. Really wanted to see that kid get a goal (for the Kings to get the first one of the game and set the tone, if nothing else). I thought the team looked good in the 1st but, 3 dead PP's, so many turn overs by the Kings (It was horrendous IMO) and the Avs' killer speed took over the rest of the game ...

Now that actually makes sense.

BTW, the 'kid' is 28 years old. lol. I laughed when ESPN said he's a 28 year old out of Cornell University... like, how many years was he held back in high school? bahahaha

The Avs are a very scary team: Big, fast, highly skilled and well-disciplined. I'm not sure they have any weaknesses at all. They're going to be a tough out in the playoffs.
