A definitive example of the term "wasted potential". The comic, and the excellent cast, deserved better.

I can't speak for the source material but, taken as a stand alone, I thought this had a nice lazy charm to it. Disposable but fun. Chris Evans was fun to watch and well, it had JDM and Idris Elba in it, which is never a bad thing.

I won't argue that, but... it just felt like it should have been so much better. Chris Evans was great, but so many of the "jokes" (not just his) were not funny, but it felt like the writers thought they were immensely clever (like the Bla-gyver thing).

There were some good parts, but... a cast as good as that, the movie should be better.

I saw that film in the theater when it came out with my family. And my father, who is a huge John Carpenter fan, was, like, what the hell? How does someone go from The Thing to this piece of crap? Lol!

Being Catholic, I love these type of movies. Man, did the ending suck monkey balls. It was as if they ran out of money.

It has been on the dish lately & its as bad now as it was when I first saw in the theaters.

My favorite line:

I've been busy and I'm a little behind on this, so here's thoughts about a ****load of recently watched movies.

Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within

The first film I saw at the LA Film Festival this year. You can read my full review here, but quickly I will just say that this is the best action/thriller film I've seen in a while. It's supposed to get released out here this Fall and I am going to pimp the **** out of it here when it does.

I've still not seen the first one, and it didn't effect my enjoyment. I did order the first one on DVD as soon as I got home, though.

JD posted about this in the Pegg/Wright/Frost thread, but I want to mention it here, too. It's maybe my favorite movie of the year so far. Top 2, at least. Both hilarious and scary. You can read my full review here if you want to.

Karate Robo Zaborgar

From the director of Machine Girl and RoboGeisha, a remake of an old Ultraman wanna-be TV show. It was pretty fun and enjoyable, but not so much that I care if I ever see it again. That kind of low-budget, ridiculously over the top Japanese film has been done much better before (like in Machine Girl), but it was enjoyable. Full write up coming soon.

Saw this one last night. I really liked the director's last (and first) film The Chaser, so this was actually the film I was most excited about. It's pretty similar in tone and style to The Chaser. Very violent and fast moving. But the violence in this one was nowhere near as disturbing. I don't want to say it was comical, as its actually pretty brutal, but there are two characters who consistently get stabbed and beaten and just keep on going, which took me out of what would have otherwise been a pretty visceral experience. Still, it was pretty awesome, although maybe a bit long at 2 1/2 hours. I would recommend it, though The Chaser is better.

Ehh. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I was expecting, but it still didn't do a whole lot for me.

This was a lot of fun. Very much a kids movie, but intelligent and funny. Some of the animation was really awesome, too.

I really enjoyed watching this, although it wasn't quite as funny as I'd hoped. It was plenty quirky, though, and I thought the characters were really likable. Fun.

Has some good funny bits and it was entertaining enough, but I don't care if I never see it again.

When the **** is this coming out on Blu-Ray so I can buy it?!?!

Hadn't seen this in years. Still a lot of fun. I think this might actually be my favorite performance by Christopher Lloyd, and I love that dude.

Nothing special, but Timothy Olyphant single-handedly made it a little more enjoyable.

**** this movie. What a complete waste of time.

Tremendous work by Colin Firth. Really pretty to look at.

Yeah. Catfish... if it weren't for the attention it got, I probably would have just written it off as being boring. But it did get attention and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why.

Wow, where to start on this one. First off...I give this a huge recommend, because it's the kinda flick that made me want to hate it...but it was so good I couldn't. Without getting too spoilery(cause you should see it yerself) imagine some small time screenwriter reads some metaphysics books and decides to combine complex theories with a Sam Spade type noirish thriller. See, you are thinking like me...what a pretentious mess(admit it) and yes, sometimes the movie is too smart for the room and goes a little 'look-at-me', but REALLY good performances and solid pacing win you over. Little nits to be picked, worst of all a character that's introduced basically to propel the story OUT LOUD(well, that and some gratuitous nudity so there's some sugar with your medicine). But overall Banderas, Sam Elliot(the bastard offspring of his Lebowski character + the DUDE), William Fichtner, Delroy Lindo...hell even that big scary dude with the hammer from Sherlock Holmes really sell this one. See this, you watch worse movies all the time...I know, cause I do too.

Damn I wanted to like this. Look at the cast. But when you get great charactor actors together you have to give them something to do. And as much as you want to ape GOODFELLAS unless you pull of the drama it's not going to work. Walken tries...Kilmer generally looks befuddled, D'onofrio collects a paycheck. Ray Stevenson, who I love...just cannot carry this on his own. Linda Cardelinni pops in as Stevenson's first wife, but through editing or narrative just sort of leaves. As does his neighbor(Fionula Flannagan). It's a movie of missed chances. Shameful waste of resources.

Shortbus is a movie that most people won't be able to stomach because it's filled with LOTS of explicit sex. My friends were making fun of it and saying how horrible it was, but I read reviews saying that it was a very good and emotional movie so I gave it a watch. I ended up really liking the film. The sex scenes are not erotic, and serve as an effective metaphor for the themes raised in the film. While many people won't be able to look past all the sexual content, at its core Shortbus is a movie that deals with the emptiness, depression, and anguish that come with being repressed and the importance of being true to yourself.
