Fair enough. My apologies. But your point about wolves can apply to any other large predator type mammal. Under duress, encroaching on their habitat, extreme hunger, etc...yes, wolves(and any other animal) will do what needs be done. But this portrayal of them as a general threat to mankind is just not true. So yeah...Apologies to anyone bored by this but it's kind of an issue with me.

Agreed. And it can indeed apply to any other predator but in European fairytales of old the wolf happens to be what they used, because that is what they experienced. And since they did encroach on them and put them under duress the wolves responded. Evil? No, wolves being wolves, doing what wolves do, what any animal would do. But they scared the hell out of folks of the time.

And BTW it sort of an issue with me as well.

Good list there little brother. Yeah, The Girl Next Door(based on the Jack Ketchum book, which is actually even more disturbing) is a hard watch. The worst horrors are those that are steeped in real circumstances. I will get back to you with some recommends since you seem game to watch movies that make you feel uncomfy. Off the top of my head, if you have not seen Inside or Martytrs(or even Fronteirs) you should seek them out. They are all French and all really unpleasant. Martyrs bruised my soul and I suspect it will never heal.

Thanks for the recs, will probably watch Martyrs and Inside later tonight

JD's recommendation of Martyrs, Inside and Fronteirs is probably what my first recommendations would be, too. Inside and Martyrs are probably my two favorite horror movies of... well, maybe ever. Maybe. Some other recommendations, off the top of my head:

Black Christmas (the original)
A Tale Of Two Sisters
The Human Centipede
Let The Right One In/Let Me In (they're both great)
The Woman
Dream Home (the Chinese movie, not the recent Daniel Craig one)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)
I Saw The Devil
Rabid (Cronenberg)
Cold Fish
Nightmare Detective
Frozen
Thirst
The Innocents
Shutter (the original)
Possession (the one with Sam Neil)

That should be enough to get you started.

Thanks bro, I've seen a few on that list and loved them (I saw the Devil, Let the Right One In, Shutter, Innocents [****ing AMAZING!!], Woman, and Tale of Two Sisters). I'll check the other ones out sometime.

And I agree with your earlier post about Vanishing - that movie is ****ing amazing. Watched Dressed to Kill recently as well. Love Michael Caine, he's one of my favorites.

Also, Les Diaboliques is one of my all time favorite psychological thrillers

Watched Chronicle on the weekend and thought it was awesome. One of the best of 2012 so far.

As for the horror movie list/types "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (unrated) I thought was just freakishly good and paranormal/supernatural. Watch it with the lights on. :)

Gee, Adgy, you watch a lot of swell movies. :D

I watched the Diabolique remake when it came out in the theater. I hadn't seen the original, but the remake follows the story closely, has a close up of Sharon Stone's ass, so I thought it was okay, but the original is in another league.

Les Diaboliques & Charade have the reputation of being the two best Hitchcockian films that Hitchcock didn't direct. Both are worth watching!

I haven't watched Haxan from beginning to end! :pssst:

Anytime Adgy, or anyone here, however, reviews a silent film, particularly, the spooky kind, it makes me happy! :D

Just finished watching Inside - ****ing hell that movie was ****ed up!! Was pretty pumped through the whole film, loved the atmosphere. I thought I was desensitized to violence but damn some scenes made me cringe and were extremely hard to watch. I liked the film though, thanks for the recommendation JD and adgy.

Up next - Martyrs!

Oh. Your soul will never be the same. You have been warned.

Don't do it, Diehard!

What's more soul corrupting, Matyrs or The Human Centipede?

I haven't watched either, but did watched Salo once, ugh! But I was younger then, young men never die!

Human Centipede is almost QUAINT in it's unsavory-ness. MARTYRS is so philosophically brutal and challenges your understanding of religion...it just ****s up your soul man...so brutally unrelenting.

Just finished Martyrs. Damn, that film was ****ing brutal. Obviously the second half was really hard to watch, so haunting and sadistic. Really takes you to the depths of evil that humans are capable of. Honestly though, it didn't have quite the effect on me that JD described. No doubt it was a very good film, but I don't feel as if my soul has been forever changed lol.

Maybe I'll watch it again in a few years, see how it affects me then.

Almost every week, like clockwork, I will go through the guide and see everything that's scheduled to play on Turner Classics and the HD movie channels. Takes a long time sometimes, but there are always some great titles. Someday, when TCM, IFC and Sundance are all HD, I will have to buy a bigger DVR.

I was reading some reviews of the remake and a lot of them were pretty positive. I'd like to see it at some point.

Still haven't seen Charade. :(

Other than Dreyer stuff, what else would you recommend in that department? Did you ever see A Page Of Madness?

I was browsing through the channels the other day and caught Antichrist being played. It was about in the middle of the movie and some serious nudity going on so I had to stop and see what this was all about. Within minutes I was watching Willem Dafoe getting knocked unconcious by blunt trauma to his naked groin followed by his erect penis ejaculating blood.

I was like "what the **** is this?". I had to switch the channel, not because I was disgusted but because I felt this movie deserved to be watched in its entirety ;)

It wasn't bad! Definitely a bit out there... I think the movie is confusing just for the sake of being confusing at times but it had some redeeming qualities and you never quite know where it's going. Obviously there are some scenes that... well.. let's just say if you're uncomfortable with full frontal nudity this isn't for you. I was surprised to see this play on the Swedish equivalent of PBS (I think).

That movie just worked me. As a lapsed Catholic the stripping of her humanity piece by piece in the name of religion, man it got to me. So relentless, even in the way they feed her by cracking the spoon against her teeth. It's horrifying to me. I will never be able to get those images out of my head.

I remember first hearing about Salo when I was 18, was too scared to see it and never thought I'd ever watch it. All these years later I decided to see it. I bet it was extremely shocking for its time, but I wasn't really put off by the film. Just had a depressing atmosphere and it seemed like Pasolini was one bitter and angry man when he made this film. Didn't really like this movie all that much, I am curious to see some of Pasolini's earlier works though (like Attacone)

After having watched it yesterday, the breadth and scope of the film's brutality and depravity is really starting to get to me. I've been thinking about it a lot today. Man I NEED to find another similar movie lol.

Haha, told you. Get that man's soul a bandaid, stat!

Oh, you silly, HD snob. ;)

It's one of those things that if it comes on the telly and there's nothing else going on, say no scheduled Magic the Gathering tournaments, it might be worth watching. Or you can just explore more of Henri-Georges Clouzot's work if you haven't (Like Wages of Fear). :D

Apparently, Hitchcock wanted to get the rights to Boileau-Narcejac's "She Who Was No More," which was the basis for Les Diaboliques, but lost, and as a consolation, bought the right to Boileau-Narcejac's "The Living and the Dead" which served as the basis for Vertigo. Tic for Tac.

Why not? Do you have the DVD?

Alas, I don't have the DVD, and that's one reason. It really is one of those movies that one has to be in the right mood to watch, you know, otherwise it's kinda hard to watch it all the way through. I would also like to watch the one with Burroughs narration.

Other than Dreyer stuff, what else would you recommend in that department? Did you ever see A Page Of Madness?

Yeah, I watched A Page of Madness, silly, I recommend it to you. :P

There's quite a bit. Have you ever watched any of Murnau's work, say, the silent Faust or Noseferatu?

You can or rather SHOULD. Faust is the APEX of silent film German expressionism. :D

What happens if I watch Martyrs, but am not a Catholic (lapsed or otherwise) and don't have a soul to begin with, what effect would it have on me? :O

Haha! If you look up the Martyrs on Amazon they'll let you know it's frequently bought together with Inside and Frontier (s)

Wouldn't that make a swell triple feature? I'll bring the Goobers. :D

I decided to take a brief hiatus from my horror movie binge and watch a film I've been meaning to see for quite some time, a Japanese movie called Confessions. It centers around a woman whose daughter was killed and her quest to take revenge on those she holds responsible. The story is told from the point of view of several different characters. I had no idea what I was in for since I did very little research prior to seeing it, all I knew was that it was one of the best Japanese films of 2010. This film had such a profound emotional impact of me. It was one of the darkest, morbid, and powerful movies I've seen in my entire life. The ending was sooooo amazing as well. Left me speechless. This movie is not pleasant to watch, but it's so well made, and the acting is superb. I'd recommend this film to just about anyone - it's that ****ing good.

Okay, back to finding another horror movie to watch for tomorrow, or tonight maybe if I can't fall asleep.
