Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!!! Released in America as Point Blank this French thriller has it all in spades. One of the best crime/suspense/thriller flicks I've seen in recent memory. It grabs you and doesn't let go until the credits roll, and was so absorbing that the 90 or so minutes felt more like 40. I won't bother explaining the plot, but rather say that if you haven't seen it already I highly recommend hitting it on Netflix streaming this weekend--and grab the popcorn for this one.

Couldn't wait to watch this because I was so curious about the twists. Wow. Talk about your intricate revenge plot. It's easy to forget that Banderas is actually a decent actor. This movie is not going to be for everyone. The main Shamalayan is honestly disturbing and is going to stick in my head for a few days.
EDIT: Just another thought...in revenge flicks I usually side with the person who was wronged. This may be the first time I actually thought the punishment exceeded the crime and I actually felt sorry for the guy on the other side.

For you...yes. It's a slow, meandering build-up with a lot of subterfuge to make you think you know where it's going...just to switch things up heading into the third act. Once the cats out of the bag it's pretty straightforward. I know Almodovar is supposed to be an auteur, but the movie could have used a little trimming. Then again, the pace seems to be important to what he was trying to accomplish. I'd like to know what you think.

Watched this low-budget film last night. A Collingswood Story is a pretty decent ghost story film, has some of your typical plot elements (house with horrible history, ghosts, etc.) but it was pretty entertaining despite the low budget and lack of top the line sfx. Worth checking out.

I liked Dream House, not sure why it got such bad reviews. I mean it's not The Shining but I didn't think it was bad. I thought it was an entertaining haunted house/ghost story. Maybe I'm just not that picky about movies these days.
Another underrated flick imo. Godsend is about a scientist who has perfected cloning and offers his services to a family who lost their son. Things take a turn for the worse as the movie progresses. I enjoyed it, apparently a lot of people didn't.

Doc Naysay...sorry, but I LOVED John Carter. Perfect mix of serious/silly and I can honestly say that I have not had the same feelings for a movie since the original Star Wars trilogy. Sadly, because the story is 100 years old and has been mined for it's 'subtle charms' youngsters may feel as if they have seen this before. But that changes nothing. This movie is almost the Anti-AVATAR. Total immersion into a foreign world. From the language to the people to the machines...sure, it's simple. But most well told ADVENTURE stories are. Beautiful to look at. A serious argument pro 3-d and I wish I had bumped to the IMAX cause this movie has depth and beauty that the cartoony Avatar did not have. I had heard that there are times that this is borderline Queen-Flash Gordon, and that's fair...but it's just so charming and...FUN that it's easy to forgive. Great use of all the toys and tools. Most importantly great use of actors. Purefoy/Ciaran Hinds from Rome, Thomas Hayden Church/Samantha Morton/Dafoe...hidden behind mo-cap, hell even Kitsch is likeable/charming in a leading man role. Hats off to Andrew Stanton...all of the $150 million spent on this is up on the screen. Sadly this movie is doomed to not do well enough to perpetuate sequels because this is a story I want more of. Go see it in 3d and if you can in Imax.

And, if I hadn't snuck in I might have followed some of the folks and WALKED OUT. TERRIBLE movie. Where to start. Elizabeth Olsen seems like the real deal. She was very good with nothing to do in a movie that is all about gimmicks and telegraphs itself so early that I had to stick around to make sure my predictions came true. Where to start...first off, this movie eventually deals with some

...lurid material. Child touchy lurid. But the almost fetishistic way the supposed single take camera always seems to be looking down miss Olsen's shirt is borderline disturbing. There is a shot early on where, after a chase scene, she pops up with full HIGHBEAMS. Look, I am breast obsessed, but even Kingsqueen admitted that it was downblouse-centric. Even worse than being obvious early this movie was just clearly BORING. And it floats into what is she seeing/imagining territory and all pretense of trying to maintain some sort of reality go out the window. Characters reveal ridiculous alternate universe takes and it just fizzles. This is a great attempt at experimental filmmaking, yet it just fails so hard that everyone needs to hang their heads in shame. The folks that made this were responsible for OPEN WATER, which was a much more successful flick. They need to venture out of their comfort zone or risk becoming the next Shamalayan.

So I caught John Carter today. I can't say that I "loved" it much as JD did but I certainly enjoyed it. It was adventure on a grand scale. I am a fan of the olde time sci fi/fantasy stuff so I liked the story. How can you go wrong with a classic from Edgar Rice Burroughs? Ok so it was not an exact match of the story but close enough. It was a bit over the top in spots, even silly, but it was fun, a movie that did not take itself too seriously. A sci-fi/ fantasy made the old way, before it was cool to be dark cynical and gritty, (BTW I like the dark cynical and gritty stuff, I just don't need it all the time). The type of movie I liked as a kid. I don't know why the critics were so quick to jump this movie and declare it a flop. Cynicism? Not cool enough? If they want gritty convince someone to turn a David Drake book into a movie. I had fun watching it, 'nuff said.
Except that, man, does Lynn Collins have a rockin' bod!

Finally caught this on HBO and I liked it a lot. It quickly builds a certain pace and vibe and it never really lets up. Between the music and the story, the editing and the tightness of the direction, it never really dies down.
A lot of that is due to the great performance by Saoirse Ronan. She finds a spot inside this character and then lives there. She's everything she should be - innocent, needing some protection and a bit naive as someone who's never really been in the world and doesn't know any better, but fully aware of herself and mostly remorseless when it comes to snapping a neck and shooting a guy in the face. It's a lot of fine lines that she walks and she never loses her balance.
So if ya haven't seen it, maybe ya should.
