I didn't think this movie was as good as its notoriety would suggest, but it was weird enough in the way that only a horror movie made in the '70's can be, which made it worth watching.

Wanted to see this...badly. On HBO/HBO on Demand. Great pedigree. I am not a HUGE fan of Gosling/Cooper, yet I understand they are top box office. They are BOTH used to terrific effect. Gosling's aw shucks smirk and Cooper's earnestness/oilyness just work. The story itself...well it plays like an OPRAH book of the month club selection. Definitely a way too many coincedences flick disguised as deep art house cinema. End result...a REALLY GOOD Lifetime flick. Things that push it over...a soundtrack by Mike Patton that uses dischordant piano and really ****ed up choir selections...Joel Edgerton, as a catalyst for tragedy...yet still completely likeable, and Dane DeHaan, who I seriously have a ****ing I GOTSTA WATCH THIS KID vibe on. It kinda punks out on the natural progression that you almost WANT to happen, yet, after days of living with it, I accept it.
Short story...you should watch this.

OH. And WHY is nobody giving RAY LIOTTA the project he deserves???? For chrissake...10 minutes of screen-time and just so goddamn menacing that it is hard to watch. You want proof of this guy's power...see NARC, SMOKING ACES, and that episode of ER he was on as the dude with the failing liver(directed by QT...I think). Man...Liotta scares me.

Saw I, Frankenstein preview tonight. Decent with enough to be different from Underworld. Light on character development and story. 3.5/5.
 


God this movie is lurid. Darkness. Exceeds King's novella, which was unpleasant itself. One of those instances where 'just because it is very well done' does not justify it's existence. When the concentration camp survivor makes the connection, and stumbles out into the hallway reaching for the first HUMAN he can so he can BAWL HIS EYES OUT...that's just too much man...too much. And I have to hand it to Bryan Singer...just a tremendously well made movie THAT I NEVER WANT TO SEE AGAIN.



And this...just shows why Singer cannot do BIG movies. This was SO LONG...so loud...so empty. Good lord, great cast and so much going on...yet it was soooooooooo tiresome. CGI overkill mixed with a script that just....wanders. Not a kids flick, nor an adult take. Pooooooor Ewan Macgregor tries sooooooooooo hard to do heavy lifting. But he just...CAN'T.

Finally saw "12 Years A Slave". Wow, just an awesome movie. So powerful. It's going to be hard to pick the Oscars this year.

The short version: pooh:

I like prison escape movies, how they probe and figure out weaknesses... they can be quite clever. Unfortunately this is not clever, it's absurd. It has the story of a bad 80s action movie which in retrospect I probably should have expected. But I didn't care for The Expendables either so take that into consideration.

Good movie, it could easily have been an uneventful 130 minutes but they did a really good job of keeping it going even when it's slow, if that makes sense. And Tom Hanks is tremendous and elevates the whole thing.
 


Oh my sweet jeebus this is a franchise killer. Tries SO hard to be some existential/artsy French Alain Delon 'caper' flick. Completely forgets what made the first one charming and FUN. Good god sooooooo pretentious. I know...'you are just seeing this now'? Yup. And it broke my heart. What a turd.



I tried so hard. I really did. Made it through first 2...and got tired of trend to tell incomplete short stories. The framing device was soooooo amateurishly filmed/acted...I tapped out. The second vignette with the POV/sportscam Zed word story wasn't horrible...but it was not enough to make me keep watching neither. sooooooooo disappointing.

So you didn't even watch the commune short? Dare I say it's one of the best horror shorts/movies ever created.

And Apt Pupil is one of the best King adaptations ever! The ending of the film is better than the book.

And I love the part when the kid buys the Nazi suit for the neighbor and tells him to wear and Gandalf, is like, no, what do you think I am going to wear it while doing grocery shopping?

Imagine if you're at Vons and some old dude next to you in the pastry department is wearing a Nazi suit with a straight face. mhihi:

Fritz Lang film noir. Nazis are involved. Okay movie, but one of his minor works. This is the film that inspired the band name, Ministry.

This got better as it went along. I thought it was well done and both creepy and disturbing.

Yeah, this is my first time watching it. I enjoyed it and it did have some nice visuals reminiscent of Italian Westerns.
 
Lego movie. GG, this is the most we've laughed at a movie in years. It was simply awesome!!

I was actually concerned we were laughing too loud several times.

There is sooooooo much going on on the screen at times, it's hard at times to take it all in. We look forward to DVD release so we can go back to hear all the lines - we missed many because of the laughter in the theater.

Blows away Pixar's last 5 - 7 movies.
 
Bigger than predicted opening weekend for Lego movie. Sequel already in the works. Good reviews all around. Want to see it...gonna have to go to a nightime show to avoid the kid heavy crowds. Did you see it in 3d? was it worth the extra $$$?

I said not too long ago that this was the only Fincher film that I still hadn't seen, but I forgot about that film with Brad Pitt where he goes from old to young (whatever it's called). Anyhooow, I thought the Zodiac was well done and the scenes with the killer were genuinely creepy.

A few years ago, I became obsessed with watching every film on AFI's top 100 films list.

Well, I forgot about it, but was reminded of it when I came across The African Queen, which is one of the films on said list that I have yet to watch. I don't know if it's one of the 100 best films made (I feel the same about a lot of films on said list, lol), but I did enjoyed it. It's visually impressive considering the time in which it was made and Bogie & Hepburn are really good in it.

I still have 2 films to complete the list: A Night at the Opera and Duck Soup.

Brian DePalma with John Travolta, who works as a sounds effects guy accidentally recording what seems to be evidence of a political assassination. I really enjoyed this one and yeah the Hitchcock influence is all over it. This movie made me realize that I haven't seen enough DePalma films from this era.

Although you may be able to catch these before then, the Marx Bros. films frequently run around New Year's. This year, the Aero in Santa Monica had a double feature of A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. It's fun to see these on the big screen with an audience. Duck Soup is my favorite of the Marx Bros. films.
