Turns out I was right. This didn't need a sequel. WAFER thin and in a rush to get to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow...SEQUEL MONEY!!!!!!
No sense of danger in this AT ALL. Everyone is the protagonist. Makes for very little drama. I realize it's a stupid comedy, but seriously...this is not R rated. It's so toothless. Seth Rogen shows more skin than anyone else. Chloe Moretz, not at her best. Kinda disappointing. Ike Barinholtz is sooooooo terribly underused. There really isn't anything to this at all. Well, no...let me amend that. Every 30 seconds someone makes some condescending 'sexism is bad' propaganda message. Except when it comes to the portrayal of men. Everyone is either gay(seriously, half the cast from the original is all of a sudden gay...except for Zac Effron, who totally should be) or loathsome sexual predators who look waaaaaaay too old to be in college. And yet...I am sure this will make a ton of money with Neighbors 3 soon to come. I would like to say with great pride that we snuck into this. Did not pay, or I wouldn't have been so kind.

This, on the other hand...was terrific. I admit, I wanted to like this. That usually makes it harder for a movie to succeed in my eyes. Expectations. But this one nailed it. Funny from the start, with Ryan Gosling being a revelation. Full of great comedy tics, subtle AND over the top. He does this one Lou Costello like thing that just was winning. Russell Crowe kinda forced into the straight man role, but still gets his shots in. AND FOR ONCE!!!!!! Shane Black does a movie with ZERO Christmas. Very similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but not. Great soundtrack...and the crowd was into this movie from the start. Lots of laughs. This movie...will make no money this weekend, coming in a distant third to Civil War and Neighbors 2. And THAT is what's wrong with Hollywood.
Go see this...Highly recommended.

Turns out Angry Birds beat the pants off both of the movies I saw. The only consolation to being right about Nice Guys not making any money is that Neighbors 2 opened way softer than expected and came in behind AB and Cap'n Merica.

Sup.

Unfriended - So, if you absolutely HAVE TO make a movie that is nothing but online chatroom footage, this is probably just about as good as it's going to get. I give the filmmakers props for doing something different and kind of interesting, but at no point was this movie really ever tense or scary. It's not bad, but for me the best thing about it was that I hadn't really seen anything like it before.

End Of Watch - Apparently, a lot of people really liked this movie. I didn't. Michael Pena is enjoyable as Michael Pena tends to be, but everything else about it... nah. The cops put themselves in these bad situations because they're ****ing idiots, so I never really felt bad or worried or any tension whatsoever about what happened to them. It was not a poorly made film, I just didn't enjoy it.

The Rover - Yes! Yeah! Another one of these indie crime/thriller gems that got little/no attention, but is just solid. I don't think many people will run out and buy the blu-ray after they see it, but I bet most everyone who watches it will be glad they did. Robert Pattinson is proving himself to be a fine actor and Guy Pearce is always worth watching. This is currently on Amazon Prime and it's recommended.

Furious 7 - I think after watching Furious 6, I said I wasn't going to bother with these movies anymore, but Jason Statham and Tony Jaa got me to give it a shot when it was available for free. I wouldn't say I regret watching it, but... I just don't care about these movies or this franchise and I never really did. But for some reason I keep watching them. I don't know. I could have watched The Rover again instead and probably should have.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes - Didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I'd hoped, but I did like it. The CGI is just mind****ingly good. Worth watching just for that, IMO.

Goodnight Mommy - Also currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Pretty solid little thriller, although I wasn't overly fond of the ending. Had some pretty good bits.

61SYHnHfPWL._.jpg

Zootopia - I went into this expecting to like it, but I think I pretty much loved it. I bet you could spend a whole day looking for references to other movies and shows in here. It was funny, it was cute, it had a good "message"... I almost wish I had children to watch it with (no, I don't).

518C47SYG5L._.jpg

Stray Dog - ****ING FINALLY, Turner Classics! Jesus! Why do 99% of the Kurosawa movies you show have to be the same two? Spice it up a little! ****! Anyway, this thriller mystery, about a Japanese cop who loses his gun, wasn't quite what I expected, but I still really enjoyed it. Toshiro Mifune has got such presence, he's like a ****ing magnet.

Stoker - Hadn't seen this since it was in theaters and decided to give it a spin. I think, initially, for me this suffered a bit from the weight of expectations. Being a movie by my the guy who did Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, I had been expecting/hoping for a similar level of enjoyment and was a little disappointed I didn't get it. Watching it now, though, I feel like I was able to appreciate it a lot more. There's still some uneven bits, but overall I feel like this is a pretty solid, ****ed up little movie that doesn't give you all the answers. Glad I gave it another shot.

Cold In July - Another I hadn't seen since it was in theaters, but for this one I loved the **** out of it from the opening minute all the way through. A re-watch did not change that at all (although seeing it on the big screen was better than on the TV at home). ****in' love this movie.

51q9yjMrLdL._.jpg

The Salvation - Mads Mikkelsen is enough for me, really, but if you want to throw in Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Eva Green, that's fine by me, too. There's not really anything new here, or different than a bunch of other Westerns you've already seen. A man is wronged by someone with more power than him and so he seeks vengeance on that man (and his large amount of anonymous henchmen). So, it is what it is, but the cast elevates it enough for me to recommend it. You've seen it before and you've probably seen it done better, but it's still worth watching.

518iDXScKpL._.jpg

Vacation - Felt the same way about this as Hipcheck. It was fun and funny for what it was, and it wasn't trying to be anything else. Chris Hemsworth's part was especially good.

51g7pZE0+PL._.jpg

Keanu - Not quite as funny as I'd hoped, but it had it's moments and the kitty was adorable as ****. Enjoyable.

5156Z8UURML._.jpg

Time Travelling Bong - This was actually better than I expected it to be. You know, I love Broad City, but the trailers for this didn't really get me too excited. It was funny, though. I'd watch it again. Nice to Ilana Glazer do something a little different.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - One of the better DC Animated flicks I've seen. Very true to the book. Sometimes even the ones that are true to the book still don't work that well, but this one was really good.

977e66bb107de5e38502315852539f65da56c8d1.jpg

Patton Oswalt: Talking For Clapping - Hey, do you like Patton Oswalt? Because he has a new stand-up special on Netflix. If you don't like Patton, this probably isn't going to change your mind, but if you do, you'll probably like this.

b86614314113d767dbd4b3c8284bd62aeaea810b.jpg

Ali Wong: Baby Cobra - And then there's Ali Wong's standup special on Netflix. Became a fan of hers after her @Midnight appearances, and after seeing this special I'm an even bigger fan. Super raunchy and gross in all the right ways. Loved it.

516DICq7uvL._.jpg

Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill! - Slightly embarrassed to admit this was my first time seeing it. I bought it on blu-ray (at Diabolik DVD, I think) after hearing it had been released on Blu on reputation alone and even though it was really expensive (over $30) and without any special features, I feel like I got my money's worth. Ridiculous and awesome all at the same time. Tons of cleavage, sarcasm and punching. It's rep is well deserved.

51GZW9P2WSL._.jpg

Lady Terminator - Another oft read about, but never seen cult flick that I finally broke down and purchased, this time during a sale at Mondo Macabro. It's pure 80's cheese and nonsense. A little tamer than I'd been expecting, but pretty fun overall. This would make a good party movie when everyone's been drinking.

51BYrwCYbbL._.jpg

The Nice Guys - Loved it. Funny. Shane Black scores again. Go see it.

Saw "The Nice Guys" last night. Excellent. Took me awhile to figure out that I wasn't supposed to "get it". And about that point is when I "got it". They absolutely nail 1978, too. My dad had one of those wood valet things on his dresser, too.

Never heard of this movie, just happened to catch it on cable the other night. I don't know what genre this fits. A sort of murder mystery, but it is almost a side note to the focus on relationships between several couples whose paths intersect. Really well written and some terrific performances. I've never seen Anthony Lapaglia in anything I liked until this. He was solid. Geoffrey Rush is Geoffrey Rush. I've never been a real fan of Barbara Hershey, but she's OK here. Some terrific performances by actors you've never heard of as well. Good stuff.

Ooof, yesterday was a tough long slog at the old cinema...

I will go into detail on the spoiler thread. Long story short...yet another overoveroverlong entry in the biggerbetterfaster arms war that Superhero movies have become. Instantly entertaining as well as forgettable. Life goes on.

Someone PLEASE...stop Bryan Singer from making movies. Usual Suspects was clearly an anomaly...or more likely a flawless script. Singer has single handedly ground the x-franchise into an unwatchable mess. There is a meta dig in the movie where one of the characters, upon exiting a movie theater, says "we all know the third (entry in a franchise) is the worst". HOW DARE HE. This movie is a jumbled mess. J.Law and Fassbender both appear to be stopping by for a drink and a paycheck. McAvoy does the deep eye staring contest that has become the cinema equivalent of 'psychic powers'...oooooh. Psylocke...ugh. Olivia Munn is horrible. Please tell me why...her psychic whip can cut through stone, yet when wrapped around someones throat it is as sharp as a box of puppies made out of marshmallow. WORST CRIME...Angel's descent into hell as ArcAngel is reduced to an afterthought. Y'know the joke from Patton Oswalt where he says that 'all '80's heavy metal videos appear to be shot in a factory where the main product manufactured is sparks...'? Well, apparently that was the note sent to the production designer. OOOOf, the costumes. Second Major Crime...Oscar Issac/Apocalypse is so undefined and inert that he has NONE of the majesty and POWER of the comic book version. He is more Im-Ho-tep than Apocalypse. Magneto is given a family, so that they can be killed and more misery can be heaped upon him. Stryker appears, for no reason. There is an expensive Weapon X cameo that serves very little purpose, except to have Jackman run around in Hulk Pants. Oh yeah, and Jean Grey(Sansa Stark...HORRIBLE actress) has a moment with Wolverine, which, if you believe the rumors surrounding Singer, is frightening. Oh yeah...and the Prof.X School gets destroyed...again. Outside of First Class, which also had it's flaws, this franchise wins hands down for MOST DISAPPOINTING. Oh, Nightcrawler is kind of fun. And, of course, Quicksilver has a good scene...unfortunately it's an almost note for note recreation of the scene in Futurama where Fry, after drinking 100 cups of coffee, saves everyone from the museum fire. So yeah. Not much to see here folks. And, it will make a ton of money, allowing Kinberg/Singer to further trash the deep history. Apparently Dark Phoenix and Mr. Sinister are next on the agenda...HOORAY. Seriously, **** Bryan Singer, and **** this movie. By the way, we snuck in...and I still wanted to ask for a refund.

This was great. I will steal the words from the review in The Atlantic, because I agree with the sentiment but would likely not be so succinct:

Weiner is arguably the best documentary about American politics in many years. (It was assembled from more than 400 hours of footage shot by the filmmakers over the course of the four-month campaign.) But it is more than that as well: a detailed study of narcissism and absent impulse-control; an object lesson in the dangers of offering one’s faith and time to a flawed candidate; and an intimate, occasionally excruciatingly, portrait of a marriage.

FWIW, I saw Weiner at Arclight Hollywood, but it's also playing at the Landmark in West LA, The Sundance Sunset aka Sunset 5 in West Hollywood, Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, and Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino.

Of those theaters, the only one I've never attended is the one in Encino. I have read that it's pretty run down, but it also seems like they play some movies that cannot be seen anywhere else. It's inevitable that I will eventually see something there.

The Do Over - Netflix original from Sandler. Some reasonably funny stuff but overall typical Sandler stuff...a bit of a twist on the premise of why all the action is happening. Not exactly what you'd expect from Sandler in that sense.

Captain America - I guess I'm getting past my enjoyment of the Marvel flicks. Not terrible but too long, far too many superheroes making appearances and quite honestly Captain America is pretty much a douchenozzle for defending Bucky after you realize what he's done, even if he was under someone else's control.

Batman vs Superman - See Captain America, but worse maybe.

Deadpool - Waaaay over the top but very funny. Super violent, not for the kiddies.

Creed - Entertaining but nothing overly special. Stallone was good as an aging Balboa but much of it felt like a rehash of previous Rocky flicks.

London has Fallen - Very interesting set up, scary to think if something like that could actually be pulled off. But at the end of the day, kinda felt like Olympus has Fallen...but in London

MASH. I never get tired of it, but the girlfriend never saw it even though she mountain bikes around the hills where they shot it. As soon as the movie opened she immediately recognized everything and could identify each road and area that has no overgrown, etc. Still an amazingly funny movie.

I had never seen this film until last bight - caught maybe the last 45 minutes or so (right when they were entering the house of bodies). I actually wanted this to be a lot better. I have a friend who is an LAPD officer, and he and his partner actually worked with Jake Gyllenhaal while he was preparing for this movie. Some interesting stories there, and he got a virtually relentless hard time over Brokeback Mountain from just about every officer he encountered. But I digress.

I found the movie a bit annoying - the whole idea of the officers and the gang members....and just about everyone else....filming themselves almost constantly. Pe?a was Pe?a - the same Pe?a from just about every film he's in. He hasn't quite run his course with me yet, but he's close.

But I think the thing that bothered me the most was the awful caricatures that were the Curbside Gang members. The whole scene where the green light gets ordered, the reason why it does (let alone the fact that it does) and then how it gets carried out seemed like a bit of a stretch for me.

The Landmark in West LA is pretty nice. Smallish, and catering to an upscale crowd...but nice.

Saw this Friday in 3d...and for one of the few times not only was I impressed with a primarily cgi movie, but 3d was clearly the best way to see this. Jon Favreau was obviously a big fan of the Disney original and it shows here. There are moments that are literal screen shots of iconic scenes. I didn't know that the songs were going to feature, I had seen the part where Baloo hums Bare Necessities...but, and it doesn't happen until late in the movie, Christopher Walken's I wanna be like you is a treat. Funny that they played Scarjo's Trust in Me during the credits instead of in the body of the film. Sounds like a Bond theme song if you ask me. Anyway, sadly this film is almost out of the theaters because you really should see it in 3d. And you should see it. It's beautiful and the voices are perfectly cast. Idris Elba is truly menacing as Shere Khan. As an animal lover I was very happy that Jon Favreau chose to cling to the Disney model that you hint at bad things but do not show them. In many respects it was quite the throwback to my childhood. Kids movies had extreme themes...and would be considered too dark for children. But that's life ain't it. Very glad that Favreau is already gearing up for a second film.
The minor quibble is that the kid who plays Mowgli is a mixed bag. But acting with a tennis ball on a stick is hard for the most accomplished actor, so I am willing to forgive.

Great snack bar, too.

Frequently, they'll be the only place in town showing a particular film, and I am always happy to go there.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. A visual marvel that will unfortunately not be a candidate for best animated feature.

Also, saw The Nice Guys this morning. It's a shame this one is not crushing at the box office. Just a lot of stupid fun. It's Shane Black goofball '80s-esque action in the best ways with the requisite Three Stooges reference included.
