Last Movie Watched

So it was the same thing as the original movie?

Seriously, how did this happen? Did people forget how awful the original movie was or just not want to admit they got conned into seeing one of the worst things ever?

I actually liked and defend the original. It was at the very least...coherent. And it's ambiguity was actually a benefit and not a distraction from the mood they created. The 'sequel' is just people making ridiculously bad decisions for NO real reason while you sit there and try to watch what equates to back in the day when you tried to watch a skinemax flick through a rolling green red and yellow picture trying to see a 2 second nipple shot. And all everyone does is scream. So it's unwatchable with dialogue basically in ALL CAPS!!!!!!!! Wingard is a fine director. I have come to really enjoy his work despite his involvement with V/H/S. This is a sketch of a movie with little to no development. Blair Witch 2 was actually a better movie. No Lie.

I love your disliking of V/H/S, lol.

That movie is so bad that G-d himself couldn't make a worse movie. Lol.

And the worse thing is that some people actually think it's good. Poor people, lol. :P

Believe it or not...V/H/S 2...Much to my shame, I couldn't help myself, is actually WORSE!

Lol!

I haven't had the nerve to watch V/H/S 2. I watched the first one because some online peeps were raving about it and were saying things like that it was the best horror anthology since the original Creepshow. V/H/S was bad, not in the Batman V Superman bad, that is, bad, but it had it moments, but just BAD.

And now you're telling that V/H/S 2 is worse? Lol. What kind of Eldritch Horror level atrocity must that be? Haha. I am glad that I am not bringing any kids into a world were such a movie exists. mhihi: rolleyes:

Hurm. Magnificent? Not quite. Well cast(Kingsqueen initiated the request to see...normally not a movie in her wheelhouse, so...), and entertaining enough to merit eventual rewatches. BUT, motivations are barely sketched out. Meaning the fellowship is basically a charming group of morally questionable rogues. Unlike the original remake where they were kinda really bad guys. The softening is fine...except it undermines the original remake's 'redemption by sacrifice' motif. Also, Fuqua plays it too light as far as their possible chances. Until(and granted, some of the character deaths are a bit of a surprise) folks start dying, you really think they are gonna A-Team the **** out of this movie.

BUT, like I said, well cast. Even in a movie where heavy lifting is not required, you get D'onofrio, Denzel and Hawke just doing what they do best. Along with Chris Pratt, who is smart enough to know what his strengths are, and keeps signing on for projects that fit him instead of the other way around. And Byung-Hun-Lee who, in a minor part, is very very strong. Along with that, you get some genuinely funny moments of camaraderie, which give the impression that this was a fun shoot...and it's hard not to walk out of the movie with a favorable impression. Oh, Peter Sarsgaard once again impresses. As a one note villain he throws enough twitchy fury into what couldn't have been more than a weeks shoot to make it worth watching.

Magnificent...no, but Satisfying Seven ain't gonna sell a lot of tickets.

Man. I can't remember ever being as uncomfortable during a movie as this one. Peter Berg wrings EVERY drop of tension out of the waiting. I mean, you know bad things are going to happen. And, in movies like this, it usually is about the event and the heroic efforts that occur during. Not this one. It's more a study of the catastrophic human failure that led to the worst oil spill in US history. Don't get me wrong...the actual event is also harrowing, but the build up is tremendous. So many things elevate this. First off...Kurt Russell. Effortless. Dude has been acting since he and I were both kids, and the quiet dignity he radiates, for a guy who has spent his career playing pretend, is just ridiculous. Marky Mark...when he has a good director, as he does here, is very very good. Especially, SPOILERS...

...at the end of the movie, after he has held everything together by preaching calm...he rolls into a ball on the hotel rug and...just loses his ****. Kudos for Berg showing a real human reaction there. Not at all a fun movie. Spent half of it with my hands over my eyes. And the postscript at the end that shows the folks responsible basically walked...well, it bristles. This is terrific movie that literally shook me. Which is why I tend to avoid real life in my movies.

Long Way North

This was excellent. So far, it's been a really very good year for movies, but nothing has blown me away. That said, this is among my top favorites for the year so far. I don't watch a lot of animation, so this style is something I hadn't seen before. I don't know if it's a common style in France or Denmark, but I suspect that even if it were, the quality of this movie is exceptional. The design looks simple, but the observation of light and motion is impeccable. Similarly, the sound design is simple, but the mix is quietly technically superb. The use of music is scarce, and a couple of times where it is used emphatically are really terrible, but forgivable. However, there are so many times when the sound has enveloped me and drew me in before I had realized it. The story, too, seems simple, and I was both resistant and skeptical after the first few scenes; but in the end I was completely absorbed. This movie will endure in my memory. I suspect that even though this is a remarkable movie, it may not get its due even on home video, because it really demands to be a cinematic experience, with the full scope that big cinema demands. That much is deceptive, because the animation appears so basic, but the big screen really serves the film well. I'm extremely glad I went to see it in the cinema. It's one of the few movies this year that gives me that impression.

Oh, and it's released by Shout! Kids (yes, that Shout!)!

It looks like it's only in a couple of Laemmle theaters this week, and I'm not sure it will go wider. There were only two of us in the auditorium yesterday (granted it was a late night show for what is more of a family movie). Anyway, the point is if period-piece animated family movies with child protagonists are your bag (haha!), you might only have a few days to see this one properly.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. A beautiful, smart movie that will have you in tears. I will tell you NOTHING...and you need to see this before people spoil it. I can honestly say that this will likely be the best flick I have seen this year. Everything about it is perfection. All 3 leads are very likeable...which is key. The technical aspects of this...cinematography/sound/visual fx...flawless. AND THE SOUNDTRACK is HAUNTING. Please. Please. See this. See it twice. Bring friends. Let Hollywood know that people still want smart and challenging sci fi with tremendous heart. I LOVE THIS MOVIE. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!

Well, finally...I really like an actress that Hollywood has force fed me. After Arrival, and this...I agree with the article I read that Amy Adams should be nominated for both and win the Best Actress Oscar in a tie.
Ok, so the movie...Didn't realize Tom Ford was a fashion designer. Interesting that he is also a good director. And he uses his background to max effect. At times this flick looks like a Revlon ad or some kinda Calvin Klein campaign. Considering one of the themes is the unhappiness of those who have all they want, it is key. Some arty flourishes could have been trimmed...the movie drags a little bit (at least for me) when he over indulges slightly.
I won't spoil it for you...but this is like Adaptation. A movie within a movie. And the secondary story is everything the primary isn't. Lean, brutal South Texas noir that could have come straight from the pen of Joe R. Lansdale. It includes the pivotal scene which the whole movie hinges on, which is singularly brutal and horribly affecting.
Acting across the board is fantastic. Kinda meh on Gyllenhall previously, but he manages to play various shades of primarily the same character, and carries the movie. His reactions during the scene I mentioned above make it even more painful to watch than it would have been otherwise. Adams, terrific. Seriously. But, for me...Michael Shannon, wow. He provides the grim humor that helps alleviate the overall grim subject matter. Apparently lost a lot of weight for the part too...which I guess makes him a real actor if you go by the scoring card. Someday this man will get the credit he deserves. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is worth mentioning as well. All menace and surly sociopathic tics with a hair trigger.
Ok, Now...the ending. Potentially divisive. And had I not seen the Arclight Extras interview with Tom Ford I may have thought it was kind of a juvenile ending to an overall adult movie. Then again, I may have worked my own thoughts into some sort of justification. Either way...it's kind of a grow-er, not a show-er. Sleep on it for a night before you judge it...either way, it's not at all a deal breaker for what is probably the second or third best movie I have seen this year.

I was annoyed with all the daughter footage. The big reveal was kind of ruined when she told her daughter to ask her father. The hand aliens were pretty dope though.

Man, the end of this year is finishing strong.
Simply a beautiful movie. Yes, the subject matter is tragic, but from that comes real beauty. Not a dry eye in the house. Highly recommended, bring tissue.

I just changed out Netflix streaming for the DVD service where they actually have more than a tiny handful of watchable movies. I set my list up to go through some 80's Mickey Rourke films. Just watched Year of the Dragon. While flawed in editing and storyline, hugely entertaining. John Lone is excellent as the up and coming Triad boss that is impatient with the old leadership. Mickey has his moments. Michael Cimino discusses, in the director's comments, casting non-actors for most of the young gangsters and chinese workers. Also, he was proud that what appears to be shot in NY Chinatown was either a set or in other Chinatowns (Vancouver etc.) and was done well enough to fool Stanley Kubrick who thought he must have filmed it in New York. The film was a little uneven but still very enjoyable. Johnny Handsome and Pope of Greenwich Village up next.

Caught The Neon Demon on TMN last night and watched it today. It was... something... else. Sorta went off the rails there in the third act... in what was up until that point a visual and compelling story. Sadly might be the only time the Triforce appears on celluloid.

Oh and surely THAT scene will be the most notorious(?) in 2016 film.

Saw Passengers today. Not a great movie. Still...perfectly good popcorn fare. Good chemistry along with a fractional Wall-e plot, and it moves quickly. Nice solid empty headed sci-fi for dummies.

When I saw Jlaw back in Winters Bone, thought she'd be an actress instead of a personality who makes movies.
So few real actors anymore.

We rented Sully tonight on demand. Great flick, especially when they reluctantly had to apologize to him and his first officer
