Nobody Knows (Dare mo shiranai) by director Hirokazu Koreeda.
It's a Japanese flick about 4 children that get abandoned by their mother. It centers around the eldest chid, who is 12 and his struggles to keep the family together - which just turns into a downward spiral into poverty and abandonment.
Mama was basically a ho since all four children had different fathers. She also liked her some karaoke, but didn't like her children to get educated because no of the were allowed to go to school. One day she decided leave the kiddos for good with just a few yen to pay the bills.
This is showing at the Nuart for a week... GREAT f'n movie. The best punk rock documentary since The Decline Of Western Civilization, and even better in that it covered the entire country (and Canada with D.O.A.). Awesome vintage live footage and really good interviews with a *****load of bands that told some classic stories.
