LeBrun: Gavi Hitting Free Agency

For the money and term he’ll get, let him walk! You simply do not pay a player like Gavrikov $9 mil no matter how much the salary cap rises since there is zero chance he’ll get any better or even can keep his current play for much longer.

There is still possible to make trades to get better. Other teams do it all the time, maybe that is something we should try to…

Sucks, considering how he had said the Kings were such a first class organization when they acquired him. But kind of a perfect storm. Few really good D on the market; the other good D went off the market early; cap going up so no one is really sure what the market is; very few teams in sell mode (so a lot of suitors); and a European based player who may want a shorter flight home. That’s a lot to deal with.

Buchard just signed for 4x10.5. He is a top end puck mover and offensive stud, (with some short comings). A 29yr old Gavy has no business sniffing that kind of dough with a long term deal.

Not necessarily analogous. Bouchard was not an UFA. That’s a massively different negotiating position. A lot more leverage for Gavi, and Brisson is no dummy. Also different skill set.

The only thing the Kings could offer is an extra year, which, may not be that bad that he didn’t take an 8 year deal. He may age great, he may not.

Give props to Brisson. He probably saw this coming when agreeing to a short term deal a couple years ago. He’s gonna get paid by the Rags who will still alternate good seasons with sh*tty seasons and not win any cups in the next decade.

That RFA deal made Bouchard the 4th highest paid defensemen in the league. Oilers bought two UFA years. This was not your typical RFA deal. You make other good points. However, my main point stands and has been my stance these past few weeks. Do not over pay for a redundant LHD. Could Blake have been smart enough to see the writing on the wall last year when he signed Edmundson?

Lots of good points.

Gavrikov had a very nice run in LA. I wish him well in New York. I sure as hell wouldn’t want LA paying him beyond 4 years.
Yeah. Very good and useful player. Came over in a good trade. We may really miss what he brought to the team. I doubt a lot of Kings fans spent a lot of money on Gavrikov jerseys. I’m bummed that he’s leaving, but 5 years from now, you may have to remind me he played for the Kings.

I am sorry, if brosef wants 8-9 million let him go. Can you imagine paying a 4D at age 35 that much and somebody who will 100 percent not be 4D by then?

That being said, he deserves to get paid what the market wants and he should get what he wants. He was a hell of a teammate and fantastic with us.

But for the price that is rumored and he gets it somewhere else, I am glad its not the Kings.

The problem with Brisson is that he has turned Gav into a journeyman. Chances are very slight that he completes whatever new contract he signs with the team he signs it with. It's fine to be all about the money, but it definitely erodes Gav's potential to build a legacy all over a few million which likely won't make much of a difference in the end.

Give me Dustin Brown's career any day over Gav's. Sure you leave money on the table, but you'll be remembered by a fan-base for generations to come.

A lot of players, a lot more than would admit it I'd venture, don't give a flying f*** about a legacy or being remembered by fans and would take cold hard cash over any such intangibles 100 times out of a 100. I think that on average, players are far less sentimental about the game than the fans. For many, it's just a job. So I don't know that Brisson turned him into anything, or is just doing what his client wants - getting him that bag.

Yeah, hockey is hockey, it's the same sport they play in LA or in NY.

But other intangibles (location/weather, taxes, quality of training/playing facilities, location vs. home etc.) are also a factor here, and I think many aren't loyal to the team/fans OR money to that extent but these other intangibles, too.

This is true and part of the reason I don’t understand the fans who complain about the former Kings who work for the team now as some sort of old boys network.

Throughout the history of the franchise it was rare for former Kings to come back to LA post career. Now we have a pipeline of former Kings who mentor, coach and reinforce what it means to be a Los Angeles King. It took the organization 50 years to get that going. We should celebrate it.

It's disappointing but if he gets the money he's rumored to get, it doesn't make sense for the Kings to pay that. We'll see if it ends up being true. And if it's the Rangers I wonder if the Kings file tampering charges. I don't know how you prove it but he doesn't get linked to them so closely without a reason.
