Super Star

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Kings’ first-round pick was awarded the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy by the Ontario Hockey League. The award is given to the league captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice with a passion and dedication to the game of hockey and his community.

I’m hoping for a Matt Boldy equivalent, but let’s be honest, we’ll probably be lucky if he pans out to be a Nick Paul type.

I have a lot of concerns about his game translating to the NHL. He's pretty slow, I'm not sure he'll be able to keep up in the NHL.
He’s already got NHL size, NHL quality shot, high character and he’s a high effort player. If he’s got any chance of overcoming his lack of foot speed it’s those other traits that will carry him to the top six and PP for some NHL team.

I've heard of players who got the speed to make it in the NHL yet oxymoronically are unable to consistently produce offensively. Austin Wagner comes to mind; what a real waste of a potentially talented player despite all that great speed he's shown us Kings fans. Speed alone is one thing but you need skills and grit to back that up. I get leery of players who are all speed and flash and not grit, integrity, and ability to get to the dirty areas. I know there has to be a balance when observing players and I understand that not every player has to be Yzerman or Bobby Clarke, but unless you're Gretzky, I don't like wiry, overtly flashy and speedy players who lack integrity and toughness; Zegras is a recent example of this phenomenon.

This is a dated article but still a good read none-the-less. I feel Greentree's skating is good enough to pass at the NHL level. He will never be a burner, but he's not going to rank among the slowest in the league either (*cough* Kuzmenko). I do worry about his hockey IQ, however. Given he will be a slower skater out there, he will need to process the game faster than others. I believe his hockey IQ will determine whether he is a star in the league, a specialist or grinder.

What I do not question, however, is that he will have a solid career in the NHL. He just offers too many ways to be useful and has the feel of a playoff performer.

I've seen fans complain about skating ability of Corey Perry, Mark Stone, John Tavares...if Greentree has a career close to any of them (without being such a j*** and dirty player in case of Perry and to an extent Stone) I'd be very happy.

The reason I’m so bullish on Greentree vs. other flawed Kings draft picks who tore up their respective junior leagues is Greentree already has NHL size at a legit 6’ 3” to pair with his immense offensive skills. His skating will hold him back from being a top line player but once he gets into the Kings pro fitness program the sky is the limit.

Adding skating speed and improving edge techniques are the easiest things for pro trainers to produce in a young player. Seems he already has the rest of the tools… and intangibles for days.

No doubt about it. One of the hallmarks of the Yannetti (Futa) drafts is the lesser importance placed on skating if there are other skills in place. It started with Wayne Simmonds in the 2007 draft and followed with prospects like Toffoli, Pearson and Vilardi. All seen as having less than above average skating when drafted. The down side is sometimes the skating issues never get better.

I think Greentree can be a NHL regular soon. Maybe he’ll need a season in the AHL but I think there’s a chance he goes the Laferriere route and skips the AHL all together. We’ll see.

I keep hoping for the Kings scouts to find a net front player like Charlie Simmer... or Wayne Simmonds! Greentree may fit that mold. Fingers crossed.
