These are always my favorite conversations and this one didn't disappoint.
Great listen as usual w/ Mark. Always interesting hearing about his process, especially the tiers.. Not to mention that Holland gave him the greenlight to completely handle the draft.
Yeah I’m always curious about that, especially when Yanetti says they were taking Doughty even if they had the first overall pick. Did they really believe that Drew was better than Stamkos? No knock against Drew, he’s an all time King and very likely a HOF’er, but Stamkos is a lock for first ballot HOF. Or perhaps the ‘BPA’ mantra came to fruition after those ’draft for need’ stretches the Kings made early in Lombardi’s tenure with Hickey and Teubert?I hope to never hear "you always take the best player available" again. As we all know, that is complete bullshit.

I think that the Stamkos/Doughty thing is pretty much a wash at this point and would not change the pick given what transpired. Anchored our defense to 2 stanley cups, won a norris...I can live with that. It's the $11M contract that's killing people, especially as his level of play has diminished with age. I'm sure the Kings knew this would be a problem eventually and they were willing to live with it...I think they hoped there would be an extra cup or 2 based on the money they paid him and Kopi but they failed to bring in the supporting talent to do that. At the end of the day, I really don't play the "what if" game on something like this...very happy with our 2 cups and Dewey.Yeah I’m always curious about that, especially when Yanetti says they were taking Doughty even if they had the first overall pick. I think you’re missing the point of my statement. It’s not a debate about whether Drew or Stamkos was the better player, but about the veracity of Yannetti’s claim itself.. and whether they believed Drew to be the better player. That being said, it could’ve been a wash in their eyes, and they then reverted to draft based on need, if all else was equal to the scoutsI think that the Stamkos/Doughty thing is pretty much a wash at this point and would not change the pick given what transpired. I don't know about either Doughty being a possible HOF'er or Stamkos being a lock for 1st ballot HOF'er .They both should gp in but Doughty seems more of a lock to me. And I believe Mark when he says that Doughty was the BPA & they would've taken him 1st. But I can't help thinking need was a factor. They already had Kopitar as a #1 center but they didn't have a #1 defenseman. And there were 4 D-men out of the top 5. They had to get one & Doughty's proved over the years that he was the best.Yeah I’m always curious about that, especially when Yanetti says they were taking Doughty even if they had the first overall pick.
