Marner Watch

Vegas house hunting excursion?

From that article.... "It cannot be stressed enough that the reported sightings of Marner and his family in Vegas are unconfirmed".

Also, it is possible that he is looking around at a number of cities with his family. It actually makes some sense if there were just a handful of teams he would be interested in going to. Could also be a rumor started by his agent to up the offers from other teams to try and get the most $. He seems to be the type of agent to do what ever it takes to make a few more bucks.

On another note. Well, at least this June is interesting for us Kings fans. It has been a while that we have had to wonder about the Kings signing any high end UFAs on 7/1. We are usually just on the sidelines watching. Now we are kind of one foot in play, one foot on the sidelines and not sure what to make of it.

Feels like we are generally one foot, maybe one and a half, on the sidelines when it comes to bigger name UFAs.

It will be very interesting to see what strings Vegas pulls to make Marner happen. 9.6M in cap space and still need 6 players to fill out the roster. I guess it's inevitable that they will pull the LTIR stunt again to make this work but still will have to figure out who else they bring in or sign. If they IR Pietrangelo, that's 8.8M there which gives them 18.7M. Let's say they sign Marner for 13. That gives them 5.7 to sign 6 guys. Doable, but at what quality?

You're giving me flashbacks to the summer of 2010 and 2011 (Kovy and B. Richards).

I don't understand why the Kings can't pull in big free agents.
Great weather
Beach Living
Great Restaurants
High taxes
High Gas prices
High Home Prices
High Home insurance
High Car insurance
Protests
Riots
Crime
Traffic
Noise
Congestion
Smog unless at the beach, gloom until 3:00pm.
Let's not forget, some of the best car chases in America, outside of maybe Arkansas.

They should be able to pull in some of the best FA's on the market.

Nick Kypreos recently said Pietrangelo’s upcoming LTIR stint might be career threatening. If that’s the case Vegas will have to find a replacement for him too.

If Kuzmenko is the best option it’s gonna be a long off-season.

We saw the very best of Kuzmenko for about 6 weeks. Then the playoffs started and he literally got benched. He’s not the answer if the Kings want to get past the Oilers.
The question re Kuzmenko was whether he could produce in the playoffs.
We kind of got an answer and it was very mixed. He was pretty good the first two games at home, invisible in the road games and just OK after those two.
I don’t know if it was him not having enough experience in playoff hockey, or something else.
I don’t think Kuzmenko is the answer but he may still be part of the team going forward. His PP time definitely helped.

I don't understand what is considered a "big free agent"

I'm not being snarky or obnoxious (well not on purpose)... what constitutes a "big free agent" and how many of them have there ever actually been, what position did they play and were the Kings even in a realistic position to acquire them?

Cus my hunch is that we're really talking about less than 20-30 players over a 30 year span during which the Kings were either in a capped out Cup winners stage or bottom of the league rebuilding stage.

I think there is a difference between big (a guy like Marner) and next tier (maybe Boeser, Provorov, Ekblad) with regards to availability each year. Guys like Marner don't come along often to your point. For me, the concerning part is that Vegas has managed to continue to add to their roster with guys like Eichel, Stone, Hertl and now possibly Marner...all upper tier guys...and they figure out how to work within the cap to do so. The Kings are still trying to figure out how to get over the hump and find that impact player. If it's not Marner, then it better be a couple of the next tier guys (via trade or FA), especially with the growing likelihood that they lose Gavy on D.

Kuzmenko had a better +/- in the playoffs than Kopi and Kempe. Also, the top line all had a great start to the series in games 1 and 2. Then they all kind of sucked the last 3-4 games of the series.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that Marner is going to end up in Vegas, Florida will resign most of their guys somehow, and Marchand probably ends up in Dallas or Carolina.
I think this seems likely. It’s good to offer a fair and honest evaluation of where things are.

Vegas seems to be a spot players like.
Why anyone would walk away from Florida is beyond me if it’s only because of a relatively smaller number.

One thing that will influence a decision for a guy like Marchand (and a very pertinent aspect that does not get brought up very often in these discussions) is the travel. Marchand is a guy who through his career in Boston rarely didn’t sleep in his own bed. Eastern guys have a much easier schedule than the Kings. At the age of 37 I suspect Marchand very much factors in the demands of travel on his decision. In fact I would imagine it influences almost every player to some degree.

The Kings are going to have to improve through a combination of FA signings without getting top tier players, trades and development. I don’t think that’s a failure necessarily. It more just the current reality.
Whatever happens on July 1 does not dictate or determine what the roster looks like come October.
As I said I think it’s important to keep all this in perspective.

Sounds like Marchand has been given an offer to return, same with Bennett. Ekblad is still in talks from what I heard.

Marchand should stay in Florida. There he will play on the 3rd line. Any other team that is going to spend big money on him will want him in the top 6, and that is probably not a good spot for him at this point in his career. 3rd line on the Panthers is perfect for him.
