Marner Watch

14.5 million is what actual superstar players like McDavid and Mackinnon and Draisaitl should be making. Not Marner. These kinds of deals are the ones which ruin a team for half a decade.
Marner is 8th among active players for points per game. I’d call him an actual superstar. He’s not a center like the guys you mentioned so that’s a detractor in contract worth, although his 200 ft game adds a lot of value back.

Another difference is that those guys don’t go to free agency. The last player of this magnitude to go UFA was Panarin. This doesn’t happen very often. We all know you have to overpay UFAs, so if 14.5 vs 12.5 is what it takes then okay. Gavi is probably going to make 8.5 (somewhere else) and Bennett 10M if he goes UFA.

Lastly, not to nitpick, but you mentioned McDavid and he’s probably going to make 20M.

I believe Hiller’s flat out rejection of 1/4th of the forwards and 1/3 of the d-men gives Holland the greenlight to mold the bottom parts of the roster in his image.

This is why I can see lots of roster activity this summer. I don’t buy it for a second that he’s just going to tweak the roster because they had over 100 points this season. Holland didn’t come off the shelf to babysit someone else’s team.
I think you are on to something. If he signs Marner, that is not going to be the only significant move. We all know that is not enough, you would have to assume that he does as well.

Then let Marner go to Raleigh. I'm not crying if the Kings pass on him this offseason. In terms of integrity in the playoffs, he sure ain't the guy to check the boxes for LA.
I am pretty sure he already so no to Raleigh. Toronto wanted to move him in a deal for Rantanen, Marner said nope.........

I see where you are coming from. I mean Rantanen just signed an 8yr deal for 12mil per and the two players have similar stats over their careers. I sure would love for Marner to sign in LA for closer to 12mil than 14mil. The problem is, the Rantanen deal was a "controlled" situation for the most part. Not a UFA bidding war where he is the only guy available.

I remember seeing DD in that video and I always assumed and still do that he was talking about Dubois
Possible, all the fan heat was pointed at Dubois. As for the play on the ice at the time it made the most sense to me that it was Roy. Forwards had to cover for him after he would flee the zone. On more than one occasion Gavy was left in the zone all by himself with nowhere to go with the pass. On some of these plays Roy was the player furthest down the ice. Just the reasons for me to say Roy, but could have been Dubois.

Remember all of the in season moves have to be considered that at the time he wanted his child to grow up in Toronto, and his wife was very very preggers. The window hadn't shattered for him yet that "fetch" wasn't going to happen.
Yeah, I also think he believed in his team and wanted to take a final run at winning the Cup with them. In reality, there were contenders. Ultimately his goal may have been to stay in Toronto, but who knows.

In terms of market, location and contention for the Cup, Carolina is a good fit. I'm guessing, at worst, it's in his top 3 teams being considered.

Yeah, for some reason I forgot about that. That being said, word is he wants to move west.

If watching these playoffs and the type of players that get it done doesn't point to you the fact that Marner is a waste of money then nothing will.
This.

The Oilers are two players and a bunch of spare parts. They have to overplay those two players, and the handful in the next tier, and that wears them out. McDrai does not have their usual jump this late in the playoffs and in this series. The playoff TOI tells the tale. The Panthers are rolling 4 lines, and are playing their top players an average of 4 minutes per game less than the Oilers top 6.

I’d argue that the Doughty and Kopitar contracts hamstrung us the last 10 years.

Basically, we should avoid 8 figure contracts.

Would you rather pay Marner, or use that money on Gavrikov, and 2 Warren Foegle’s?

I'd rather spend the money on Marner - high end elite talent is going to do a lot for your team and, if you draft worth a damn, will pay high dividends. Looks at Detriot with Datsyuk and Zetterberg and Lindstrom, Pits with Lemieux and Jagr / then again with Crosby and Malkin, Chicago with Toews and Kane. You are always going to need some high end talent to lead the team.

Also let's not kid ourselves, Barkov, Tkachuk and Bobs all count as elite talent. Florida simply signed them years ago which their AAV reflects. Still, you are looking at a $10m, $9.5m, $10m AAV. Had they signed this summer, at least two of the three would get large pay raises.

The Panthers are three players and a bunch of spare parts. A team built through waiver wire pickups, castoffs and reclamation projects.
Since Florida have players like Bobrovsky, Barkov, Reinhart, Bennett, Thachuk, Ekblad, Forsling, Jones and Marchand can you please help me understand which of these are the 3 good players and which are just spare parts?

Because I would love if Kings had ”spare parts” like that!

Yes, Florida struck gold getting Forsling via waivers but we could have got him for free too, but we didn’t. And Zito really have proved he’s a GM wizard trading for Reinhart, Bennett, Thachuk, Verhaeghe, Jones, Mikkola and Marchand! That’s undeniably some extremely good asset management!

The big 3 are their 3 biggest salaries. Barkov, Bob and Tkachuk. Every other player on that roster could’ve been acquired by every other team in the league at one time or another. The magic of what Bill Zito has done in Florida is find the players who were hiding in plain sight. The players who were overlooked by 30 other teams.

Marchand is a little different because he’s a rental with a No Trade Clause and he picked Florida over teams like LA.
