As Elliotte Friedman framed it, Saturday night turned into a war of attrition across the NHL, with several teams losing key players to injuries ranging from concerning to downright alarming.

From star defensemen to depth scorers, the league saw a sudden cluster of players exit games, and most clubs won’t know the full extent of the damage until early in the week.

Latest on Charlie McAvoy

The most high-profile scare came in Montreal, where Charlie McAvoy took a puck directly to the jaw and immediately left for evaluation. The good news? He traveled home with the Bruins. The bad news? He’ll undergo further testing, and his status remains uncertain.

McAvoy’s absence would be a major blow. He’s been playing more than 25 minutes a night recently and leads all Boston blueliners with 14 assists in 19 games. If he’s out, the Bruins will be forced to find a way to replace him as a whole, since no one close on the roster can do what he does.

Meanwhile, Viktor Arvidsson, who managed to score on Saturday, is also expected to miss time due to a lower-body injury.

Latest On Drew Doughty

Los Angeles’ Kings defenseman Drew Doughty blocked a shot off the foot and left in a walking boot. Early indications suggest he’ll miss a few weeks, a significant loss for a team already battling inconsistency. It may also hurt his chances of making Team Canada at the Olympics.

Other Notable Injuries

The Chicago Blackhawks confirmed that Nick Foligno will be out four weeks with a hand injury, while Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of Michael Kesselring’s injury, “My initial thought is it doesn’t look good but we will see.”

The Dallas Stars announced that top defenseman Thomas Harley is week-to-week with a lower-body issue. Harley has quietly been their most reliable blueliner, and losing him for several weeks is a massive problem.

Elsewhere, Matt Murray left his game after stretching across the crease for a save, and Calgary prospect Sam Honzek left following an unfortunate collision with Mikael Backlund.

For one night, the NHL looked more like a triage center than a hockey league. Teams will now spend the next few days evaluating, reshuffling, and hoping Saturday’s damage doesn’t derail their momentum as the condensed season only gets more challenging.
