The post NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Flames and Oilers Win, Matthews… appeared first on NHL Trade Talk.
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 14). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. In our roundup, two Canadian teams – the Flames and the Oilers won last night – and Auston Matthews will be ready to rumble when the 4 Nations Face-Off comes around.
Auston Matthews of the Maple Leafs
The Calgary Flames downed the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2, led by Jakob Pelletier’s two goals and an assist. On his first first-period goal, rookie Rory Kerins (who was making his NHL debut) picked up his first NHL point on the play. Kerins ended with two assists on the night and finished a plus-3.
For the Blackhawks, Connor Bedard scored his 100th NHL point with a power-play goal. The Blackhawks have now lost three straight and four of five games. As a note, Bedard (who has played 112 games) took the fewest games by a teenager to reach 100 career points since Sidney Crosby (who only 80 games in 2005-06).
Last night, in a low-scoring game, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 1-0. In no surprise, the Oilers’ Connor McDavid celebrated his birthday by scoring the game’s only goal. The Oilers goalie, Stuart Skinner, delivered a shutout game, stopping 30 shots.
It wasn’t as if the Kings didn’t have their chances, but they could not break through the Oilers’ tight-checking defense. For the Oilers, forward Mattias Janmark played his 600th NHL game, and Leon Draisaitl extended his point streak to three games (two goals, three assists).
Although Auston Matthews missed several games for his Toronto Maple Leafs, it looks as if he’ll be ready to go when the 4 Nations Face-Off comes around. His upper-body injury had been nagging him, but he seems to have been rehabbed it. It sure hasn’t hurt his recent play, except for the 3-0 shutout the Vancouver Canucks delivered in their road win in Toronto.
The upcoming tournament will be Matthews’ first U.S. national team appearance in almost a decade (since 2016).
