THERE IT IS! The Sizzler...across the street!

"Careful, you may start eating red meat again" - lmao. These are gold. It's almost weird to me to see these as I was born in 91. Was LA a buzz with hockey ever before Gretzky? IDK. I don't know much about him, but I believe his coming was what started a lot of the fandom in LA and SoCal in general. It's very cool to see the 60s-80s stuff. During the Grateful Dead night someone asked what the hell the Kings have to do with the Grateful Dead - well IDK they kinda both emerged in 1967 in California, so there's that. Those purple jerseys are my favorite I've seen of any sports team ever, hence why I own a vintage replica of one.

Oct 13, 1961 The LA Blades take the ice at the Sports Arena, LA broadcasting legends Gil Stratton (worked as a sportscaster for several LA stations) and Jerry Doggett (Dodgers pbp along with Vin Scully) call the action, the Blades lost 7-3 to Portland, future King Dale Rolfe played for Portland that night in front of 10,286.

Feb 14, 1971 Future Kings coach Tom Webster scores two for the Dead Things in the Tank Bowl in a 4-0 loss:

Feb 28, 1974, Butch Goring puts two past backup Phil Myre (not pictured) in a 3-1 Kings victory:

March 16, 1968 Doug Robinson and Ted Irvine score as the Kings take down the North Stars 2-1:

March 30, 1968 The Kings take a 2-0 lead on the woeful Seals, then choke it away in a 2-2 tie, had the Kings won that night, they would have won the Western Division on the tiebreaker with the Flyers at 73 points, the Kings would have had 32 wins vs the Flyers 31.

Jack Kent Cooke claimed they had been done in by a "greenhorn referee", which was slammed down by Clarence Campbell:

April 4, 1968, Game 1 of the first round, the Kings win 2-1 over Minnesota on goals by Eddie Joyal and Bill White, as Cesare Maniago is peppered with 40 shots. Only 6,847 show up, the assassination of MLK did not help the walk up gate.

April 6, 1968, The North Stars are mad about the practice time they are given for the 5th, 8am at Pickwick in Burbank. Coach Wren Blair calls it "Bush League." Also why are they staying at the Ambassador Hotel, which is neither close to the Forum or LAX? Did they want some party time at the fading Cocoanut Grove?

img

Lowell MacDonald and Eddie Joyal gave the Kings a 2-0 lead in the game and the series, Terry Sawchuk had 18 saves in the shutout in front of 8.144.

Cross-Traffic: THanks for sharing those articles from 1968! Pure gold! Interesting, the Kings had a goal disallowed (and a division title lost!) because of a man in the crease, a rule that pretty much still exists today. OF course, so does video review.

April 9, 1968, a sparse crowd of 6,797 watches the North Stars come back in the series led by the 2 goals and 2 assists by Bill Collins in a 7-5 win. The Kings had a 3-1 lead in the first (sound familiar?) Sawchuk is pulled to start the 3rd and backup Wayne Rutledge gives up a goal 9 seconds into the period to make the game 6-3.

The poor ticket sales must have reminded the North Stars to put an ad into the paper for the next game:

img

Oct 14, 1967 The Kings place an ad for the first two games at the watertank known as the Long Beach Arena:

April 11, 1968, the Kings take a 2-0 lead, you know the script, they blew it and lost 3-2 on a Dave Balon shot in the middle of the 2nd in front of another half full crowd.

April 13, 1968, Kings coach Red Kelly is fed up with the officiating, the complaining didn't change that the Kings nearly choked again after 2 goals in 15 seconds by Gord Labbossiere and a goal in the 2nd by Ed Joyal. Wayne Connelly scored two in the 3rd to make the game close:

Once again the Lakers are on the road in the playoffs and get the live coverage on KNX, you want to see or hear the game live, better drive yourself to the Forum. The game drew 10,685 with the Lakers game on TV and local competition with Roller Derby....

C'mon! Who wouldn't rather watch Shirley Hardman in a "knock down drag out" match race? When you do don't forget to call Richman 9-5171!

April 16, 1968, the North Stars backs are against the wall, an additional $750 per player is at stake for winning the series (about $6,448 in 2023 greenbacks):

Mike McMahon makes it 1-0, then 3 unanswered goals by Doug Robinson, Frenchy Lemieux and Howie Hughes by the 4:20 mark of the 2nd gives the Kings a 2 goal advantage. But the North Stars would not go away, backup goalie Wayne Rutledge and the Kings D give up 2 goals by Bill Goldsworthy and Bob McCord tie it up and the Kings go into the first playoff overtime. 31 year old Milan Marcetta begins a Chris Kontos like run with the OT winner at 9:11 in front of 8,380.

April 18, 1968, the Kings first game 7 is an embarrassing one, a crowd of 11,214 watches Milan Marcetta score 4 points (2g, 2a), Dave Balon with 4 points (1g,3a), Bill Goldsworthy and future Kings coach Parker MacDonald score 2 in a 9-4 rout at the Forum. Terry Sawchuk is given the beachball treatment and booed all game. Minnesota coach Wren Blair thanks Jack Kent Cooke for the motivation in saying the Kings would win the Stanley Cup with a washed up 38 year old goalie.

In October Sawchuk would be traded to Detroit for center Jimmy Peters, 2 years later he would be dead after a fight with his teammate Ron Stewart over expenses for the house they shared.

Kings Playoff tickets for $3.50.

Probably won't see that again any time soon.

April 2, 1969, with the Blues having 88 points in the West, the Seals finished 19 points back and the Kings with a dismal record of 24-42-10 qualify at 58 points, so Oakland opens at home for the playoffs, but there is just one problem, they are going to bleed money with an empty house, with over 10,000 seats available for Game 1:

img

In front of 5,449, the Kings, losers of 5 in a row heading into the playoffs, win game 1 and their first ot victory with 2 goals from Gary Croteau and Jet Joyal, Frenchy Lemieux added 3 helpers. Ted Irvine scored the winner at 19 seconds of the OT, assisted by Jimmy Peters, acquired in the Sawchuk trade.

April 3, 1969:Now the Seals decide to put an ad in the paper, did it change the attendance for Game 2? We shall see:
