Teubert was considered as a possible top 5 pick going into his draft year. His game plateaued, tough to write off a kid you were entrigued by as washed up after one season, but it happens every year.

Teubert had the total package, just never put it together. I won't hold taking that chance against the Kings. He wasn't a reach.

Which reputable scouting service had Teubert in contention for top 5 in 2008? Stamkos, Doughty, Pietrangelo and Bogosian were locks in the top 4. Filatov was the wild card because of the Russian factor. Schenn, Myers and even Cody Hodgson all had significantly more heat than Teubert. If I recall CSB had Teubert ranked in the mid 20 in their final NA skater rankings. More importantly Lombardi has talked about the big swing and miss they made in the 1st round because they were caught chasing the perfect fit (he never specifically named Teubert) and Mark Yannetti did the same on a podcast interview. The organization admits they made a mistake with that draft.

Yep, Lombardi wanted Teubert due to his size and tough/nasty nature. Ignored some red flags IMO and went after him anyway. This was not the first of Dean's 1st round misses, he had just drafted Hickey the year before. However, in that same 2007 draft year Dean did pretty well in the 4th round and added some players that helped the Kings win 2 cups. (Martinez and King)

Plus, in 2008 in the second round, he drafted Voynov, which until October of 2014, was a fantastic choice also.

Yep, while he did grab Toffoli in the 2nd round in 2010, he kind of wasted that 1st round pic on Forbort. The very next pic the Blues picked Tarasenko. Dean always dreamed of getting his Chara type of defensemen.
