Doh! Public school math.Did they lose 10? I thought they lost the last 4 last season after winning two and then all four this season. Isn't that 8.
Thanks for your hard work all season long Susan! Special thanks to Jamdawg as always!See y'all next season! 84 games next season! that's 84 chances to be King of the Mountain!

A few things here.No that was known already. Don’t want to write a long post on this GDT, but you’re asking for it so here’s a partial list:
-Playoff games are ALWAYS good experiences for young players. Helenius cemented his role as 4th line center. Clarke contined to demonstrate he’s the best dman on the team.
-Kuemper is officially expendable. No need to bring both goalies back.
-The increased physicality shows a decent baseline to build from.
-The D is truly exposed as too immobile to keep up.
-Hiller always preached forecheck but this team actually did it.
-that said, neutral zone clogging can steal a game or two (at best) but can’t win a series against a proper opponent.
-there are no illusions for Luc to fall back on after this loss. If they missed, he gets to blame the injuries and wash his hands. This was a clear demonstration of how much farther they have to go. And for a GM in Holland with no real ties to the org, this is valuable.
They don’t make it, cool. Enjoy a draft pick one or two places higher. If you wish they didn’t make it because watching them lose hurts, how on Earth could this hurt? We all had them as losing before the series started.
A few things here.
First, if they went into tank mode, it's not just a matter of 17 pick vs 16 or whatever. They would have been sellers at the deadline. That means more assets. Clearly this team ain't it, and selling off the weak links is really what's needed. I believe they get the most for those trades with desperate teams during the deadline. Now, they're gonna have to wheel and deal in the summer, with less hungry trade partners.
Second, we lose a 2nd round pick instead of a 3rd by making the playoffs for Laughton.
Third, we all know a rebuild of some kind is coming. The longer we delay it, the longer we'll be in it.
Fourth, these points that you mention, I don't know that they're revelations to me. Didn't we know Darcy lost the position to Anton in the final stretch? Didn't we know that DJ's style was better than Hiller's? Didn't we know that the D wasn't mobile? To me, Luc's position is more precarious from having missed the playoffs all together. Instead, he can go to back to ownership and say 'Look, we got into the playoff, don't blow us up.'
I understand that the young players need experience. But sometimes losing over and over in the playoffs drills in failure and can break confidence during development.
[/QUOTE]Thanks for the reply. Your key word there is “if.” They were never going to tank, so I’m not basing my points on what-ifs or shoulds, only what was/is.
Who cares? Also making the playoffs makes him more likely to re-sign than not.
I wanted a retool the next couple years. This means no Panarin, play Greentree next year, bring up young players early, etc. that’s not happening so I’m not addressing things that do happen via that lens.
Regarding a rebuild, King started their rebuild in the 2017/18 season. Tore it down. Tell me a franchise who commences two rebuilds within a single decade. I’m not talking retool, i’m talking rebuild. Doesn’t happen. So no use pining for something that would never happen. We had a rebuild. It failed. Now we have to try and thread some awfully difficult needles.
A hot stretch for Forsberg late is not the same as what he showed in the playoffs against the best team in the league. This isn’t about DJ’s style being better than Hiller’s, but having the opportunity to assess how a style different than Hiller’s fared in the playoffs. Take the good and analyze the bad.
This also shone new light on the defense. Kings could never break out quickly enough to be dangerous in CO’s zone. They were always set up and waiting. Kings either didn’t get a shot or certainly didn’t get a second shot. They didn’t often get to the net. This all starts from the first pass on the backend and a playoff series against a clinical team in CO gives even better data to this extent.
I don’t think missing the playoffs would have made Luc any more fireable than getting swept. I fear Luc isn’t going anywhere yet regardless. But still, we all know if they missed he’d have a laundry list and right now the clear reality is they’re not good enough. This loss is more sobering than missing.
I guarantee you Clarke and Laf aren’t suffering a break in confidence. On the other hand, it does more for a team psychologically to be status quo and still in search of improvement than it does to have the negative trajectory of missing the playoffs altogether.
Friends, especially @JustJoe and @Clif,
As I so often advise, follow the money. AEG is in it for the money and the money says AEG is happy to make the playoffs and let fans think the team is "right there" and keep cash flowing. The recurring cash flow from being a playoff team (however weak) is less cash-risky than rebuilding to be a real contender. So, they didn't sell at the deadline when they could have sacrificed playoffs this year for better positioning in the future.
See most of the Clippers years under Donald Sterling.
I say 'if' because I'm comparing a situation that didn't happen to the one that did. That's a pretty standard form of debate.
I think saying a second round pick is something no one cares about doesn't hold water.
This idea that the team is a tweak or retool away from being a contender is hard to believe given the product we saw on ice. The points you make about the defense are something we all already knew, its futility didn't need further evidence.
I appreciate the idea that the NHL playoffs often give the underdog a puncher's chance. But sometimes cutting your losses and planning for the future is the smarter idea compared to betting against the house.
If I'm Q, is my confidence high after this series? Compare it to how he finished the season.
Mmmm, no. And also, no. I was comparing a tank to getting steam rolled by the Avs. In which I said, I would have loved to see a tank because A/B/C, and how the benefits of selling at the deadline and getting a higher draft pick made more sense to me. The 'if' in this scenario is pertinent to my preference, not a red herring. It is perfectly logical for me to argue the team would be better off 'if' they had taken a certain course of action instead of what they did. Not sure what the disconnect is. The likelihood of a chosen scenario does not diminish its merit. You’re saying “if” in comparing reality to something that was never going to happen. That’s not standard debate. The topic was not “would the Kings be better off rebuilding.” It was “would the Kings be better off missing the playoffs or making them.” The team is not rebuilding. I am not talking about a hypothetical team who is, but what we have in front of us.
Splitting hairs at a third vs. a second round pick when the piece you got back is Scott Laughton. Especially if he resigns.
Woah! I never said this team is a tweak away from being a contender. I even said I’d prefer a retool, but again that’s not what they’re doing. So I addressed what they are doing and how making the playoffs helps in that direction. You can talk cutting losses but all that meant this year is a pick at 15 or 16 vs 17. Minus all of the other pluses they got which I listed but you disagree with which is fine, i made my case.

This was my second post on the thread -
"I would have loved a tank for the draft! The team will gain nothing from this series. No one seems to be adjusting in any way. And I don't know what positives you can take from a potential sweep or five game exit."
So, ya.
It's really not that deep. You were mischaracterizing my argument, so I showed you what I said.Cool. I don’t memorize your posts and haven’t seen enough from you to have a concept on what you’re about as I do with frequent posters. Tanking was not mentioned in your reply to my comment. So I didn’t know that’s where you were coming from. Simple.
Try and exercise good faith when you post on here. You’re not tallying up a bunch of points for trying to be all gotcha with me.
