GDT ***Playoffs Round 1 Game 5 GDT Oilers vs. Kings 4/29/25 7:00pm on KCAL, FanDuel(?), TBS, max***

It was over that second.

All the Kings fans I have talked to on-line and face-to-face after Sunday said the same exact thing: As soon as Byfield tried to skate the puck out and was stripped, this series was over. Done.

It was a 100% chance Edmonton would tie it up, win in OT, then absolutely smoke us at home.

We all saw this coming from a mile away.

And all Quinton had to do was chip the puck out. Game over. And for all practical puposes, the series.

But he did what may very well be the stupidest thing I have ever seen in a situation like that. He tried to play hero and gave the Oilers life. And like sharks, they smelled the blood in the water and pounced.

I'm not remotely upset. I knew this was over the moment Byfield had his brain fart. It was written in stone. Bummer because we got so close. But first Hiller gambled and lost. Then Byfield gambled and lost. Those two should avoid Vegas like the plague.

They looked gassed from the opening face off last night. Even passes were soft and sloppy, never mind the skating.

Which is just mental exhaustion. These are professional athletes with weird looking abs - they are in shape and can play after 48 hours. They're mentally drained and it's affecting their bodies. Have the whole team do a peyote retreat right this second in the ashes of the Coyotes stadium, surrounding themselves with the spirits of sadness and mediocrity, and face their demons, and come back and win 2 and we're good.

I was really hoping that Hiller would get a good "talking to" by Blake after game 4, but apparently that didn't happen. I turned last night's game off after the first period. I knew the Kings were done when they came out so flat.

Ask Mr CHL coach of the year why he again played the fourth line 4 minutes and Spence 8. When I saw Kempe on the point I was thinking why are you taking our best weapon in the slot and sticking him on the point?

Regarding Q’s failed clear, even if he does get it out, there’s 40 seconds left, which would certainly be enough time for the Oilers to regroup and score. Once more, even if he does clear it and the Kings win, with Hiller going with only three lines and 4 D, the Kings might easily blow a 3-1 series lead, just by being so tired.

Did Kempe really play defense shifts?
Yes, actually. Because the GM went out and got another big strapping LHD in Edmundson. Kings have no puck mover or offensive minded LHD. I have been bitching about this for a while, especially after dumping the 1-3-1. So, Adrian Kempe to the rescue.

Yes and no.

If the Kings win that game, they are feeling really good/confident and the Oilers are feeling a bit deflated. After that mistake and the OT the Oilers felt really good about their game and gained a ton of confidence. The Kings felt disappointed and deflated. That 3rd and then OT just drained the team. Not going to OT would have helped them tremendously going into game 5. They lost two games they should / could have won, and got run over in the process.

Going back to game one when the Oilers turned it on in the 3rd and tied the game, I knew then this was not going to be easy for the Kings. No matter how good they looked early. It has been the same story for 4 years now. The Oilers turn up the heat and the Kings wilt.

They basically just went to a 4 FW, 1D lineup, not unlike their PP unit before going a 5FW unit. He may have been playing the point in the O-zone, but I wouldn't call what he was inserted to do "playing D."

I am sorry, but what else do you call it? Playing 5 on 5 and you play the point and you are one of two guys to fall back and defend when needed..... what do people generally call that position?

Kempe was put in that position because Blake went out and got the Kings their 3rd big slow defensive defensemen. No mobile/offensive minded LHD on the Kings. So, Kempe turned into that LHD. What a waste of Kempe's talent and ability by having him at the point like that. I mean, what else can Hiller do though?

Hiller has no interest in playing mobile puck moving d-men.

No answer for the first part of your question, but for the second, because Blake bought Edmundson instead of an offensive minded LHD. Edmundson sure is cross-checkiong and punishing those Oilers so far, huh?

Seems that way, but do the Kings have any good ones? Spence used to be better, but it seems that his confidence has been shot this past year. He cannot even make a pass. Clarke is ok, but his skating ability is lacking IMO.
