Who would have thought back on opening night that in year one under Andrew Lord, the Ontario Reign would be on the verge of eclipsing 100 points for the first time in franchise history?
Yet, with one final regular season game to play, they find themselves sitting at 99 points — and having already clinched the AHL’s Pacific Division. Now, one more point stands between them and the century mark.
Ontario enters tonight on a six-game winning streak and has picked up points in 13 straight at home. Another win at Toyota Arena would match their longest run of the season, a stretch that lasted from Feb. 18 to Mar. 6.
Just about everything has just gone right for Lord & Co. to date. If there was one area to give a final push on — maybe moving from a B+ up to an A- — it would be special teams. The Reign power play ranks eighth in the league, while the penalty kill sits fifth. Certainly, admirable marks either way.
Additionally, there have been career years all over the roster. Martin Chromiak, Andre Lee, Aatu Jamsen, and plenty more. Name a player, and chances are he’s having the best year of his career.
Goaltending deserves recognition, as well. Erik Portillo and Pheonix Copley were outstanding all season, while Isaiah Saville impressed in limited action. More recently, Hampton Slukynsky has been excellent in his two starts.
Fittingly, the man who started the season will finish it, as Portillo gets the start tonight. He’ll aim to build momentum heading into the playoffs. By virtue of finishing with the No. 1 seed, Ontario will have a bye in Round 1. Thus, these game reps are very important, as it’s the only real hockey the group will get prior to around May 1 (Round 2).

Angus Booth on wearing the A tonight:
It was a huge honor. Coach Lord told me yesterday and it's just very special to be able to wear it for such a cool organization. There's a lot of other good players, older players, who could have had it also. So it's a big privilege. pic.twitter.com/jKWedPKSH6

Martin Chromiak on playing with Kenny Connors as his center — It's great. I think everyone knows how good he is. He's doing an amazing job in our zone, and in the [defensive] zone. So, it's just fun to play with him.
