That's how they distinguish rocks from tools:


  • Flakes of a similar size
  • flakes oriented and overlapping forming an edge
  • bulbs of percussion indicating strong short term force rather than long term pressure
  • platform preparation
  • small flakes along the edge showing a flintknapper preparing and edge;
  • stone type selection
  • use wear on edges, among others

For anyone wondering this is the basic scenario for Peer review. Articles to journals even Science are given a one over by folks who look at it and say "sounds plausible publish it". Then the article comes out and other people attempt to use that science to expand or push the data to a new idea...except when they can't replicate the results and then the authors start to look really bad.
