Otto Hahn was the one who tried to write Meitner out of the picture; it fooled nobody in the physics community at the time, and turned sentiment against him.

Meitner has an atomic element named after her. Element (or naming of a unit [like gauss or ohm, for example]) trumps a Nobel Prize.

He and Strassman discovered the fission by-products, but didn't have a clue as to the mechanism by which they were produced. They sent the results to Meitner (who had gone to Sweden to escape the Nazis), and she, along with her cousin Otto Frisch, worked out the theory behind fission. Hahn got the credit for just seeing it.

It's kind of like when Penzias and Wilson got a Nobel for detecting the cosmic microwave background, instead of the guys who predicted it.

Lame in each case.
