So, who do we keep, trade or promote?

The Kings need a LD. Chychrun is a top LD on a team friendly contract. He's actually good at both ends of the ice too. A trade package of crap isn't going to move the needle. Armstrong has already waited a year on the deal. I don't see him jumping on a package which combines a few of Durzi, Spence, Turcotte, Kupari, 2nd round pick, etc.

Cap considerations aside (AZ has to take back a big contract or 2 like Walker, Petersen, or even Roy (who I don't want going anywhere), the hockey trade part starts with Turcotte/Vilardi/Kaliyev + Spence + 2023 1st + 2023/2024 2nd. And that's only if they see Turcotte/Vilardi/Kaliyev valued as a 1st rounder. I sure don't see any other prospect (besides QB or BC) that I'd trade a 1st for if I were another GM.

So one single play rules Chychrun out of the discussion?!? A guy who eats minutes, has size and scoring, and has put up great stats this season.

That's like saying Ovechkin sucks because of this play:

That's true. Ovechkin sucks because he's a rabid Putin supporter.

The rumors make no sense. Why would the Yotes sit Chychrun but the Kings player(s) still play?

Are you paid to complain on a message board? :irie:

It just cracks me up when people complain and have no solution.

Isn't that what message boards are for? Stop giving me a hard time for not having a solution to an obvious problem. I don't know who's available and who isn't. I have a full time job. I don't get paid to do research on all of the goalies in the league. You don't want to hear people complain, maybe you should get off of this message board.

...or if you don't want to hear opinions on thoughts you post, don't post them.

I'm done.

It's an interesting (to me at least) total contradiction I have in my opinions. One opinion is I don't want a quitter. The contradiction is I want some players who let their emotions get the better of them sometimes. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for him to play for a team that seems to be perpetually 5+ years away from being even good.

Precisely the point I made above. To think this guy is not absolutely disheartened from day ONE of the season would be asinine. That includes going back a few seasons, or his entire career thus far, and into the foreseeable future. What’s he really got to play for, aside from his UFA contract in a few seasons? I’m sure his agent has even advised him to relax, protect his body, and wait for that last season before UFA, and then go lights out so he can sign a doozie with a team poised to make waves.

The rumors make no sense. Why would the Yotes sit Chychrun but the Kings player(s) still play?

This is a great point. No one was scratched from the Reign game last night, or the Kings lineup. Aside from Vilardi not playing, and I’m not sure what the Kings can do in regards to Clarke playing for his OHL team or not.

I have a genuine question here though, given the nature of the kings waiver crunch that is due to arrive sooner rather than later. Would we rather get fleeced in a trade but still get a guy like chychrun back, or just stay the course and see some of these high draft pick prospects either fizzle and fail to make our roster, or get claimed by other teams over the next couple seasons?

The mental exercise here is to really dig and and project where guys like Turcotte, kaliyev, Spence, Durzi actually have roster spots over the next 2-3 seasons. Sure, we can slow roast them over the next few campaigns, but it also becomes a delicate balancing act between prognosticating a breakout season, and losing them to waivers, only to watch them blossom for another club.

Aside from that, let’s remember that Chychrun is only 24, and perhaps isn’t done fully developing into a position that traditionally takes longer for guys to grow into. Maybe he’s just never played for a club that actually values, and knows how to instruct and instill defensive responsibility. Can you imagine him going from a club of rogues, vagabonds and young forwards to a team with peer pressure from guys like Doughty, Kopitar, Danault, etc? You think the dude would dog it, playing alongside ****ing champions like that? I suspect it would have a profound effect on how he mentally approaches the game. We know he’s got the skating and hockey talent, but just like our club in the 09-11 seasons.. they needed to organically grow and be reinforced with other leaders/winners. Chychrun hasn’t even had a sniff of playing with real pros in that mold for his entire NHL career, has he?

The rumors make no sense. Why would the Yotes sit Chychrun but the Kings player(s) still play?

Because the Yotes have already folded up shop and the Kings aren't in a position to sit players. The Kings would likely dictate that JC sit. Additionally, rumors are that the Kings did not want to do anything to take away or disrupt from last night's festivities.

Nick Kypreos just tweeted this out:

I am all for moving a prospect for a proven quantity. Get it done, Rob!

Yeah, I was just talking to my daughter about this. I had a feeling this might happen. Not sure how I feel but if you are in win now mode, and JC still has a long career ahead of him, probably a reasonable trade off. Still would leave a bit of a sour aftertaste in my mouth though.

Let me ask you this...if you had to choose one, would you give up Clarke or Byfield.

With the Kings' wealth of talent on the right side, I would give up Clarke for a 24-year old Chychrun. Kings need QB back at 3C when Vilardi comes back on the top line.

I think Byfield has a higher ceiling and lower floor. But Clarke will be special. I think Clarke is a better ask for a rebuild. And Byfield is perfect for where we are. I'm actually hoping we don't add Chromiak. Boy has been pure fire lately.

Rumor that Vejmelka also a part of the trade which could be what is driving up the Clarke asking price. Which leads to this question...who's the odd man out? Quick or Copley? Vejmelka and Copley would be a solid duo.

Got a link or something to post on that rumor?

The Vejmelka rumor sort of reminds me of some trade proposals for Chychrun last year that casually threw in Lawson Crouse as well. Getting Vejmelka and jettisoning Petersen would both be expensive for us.

A few thoughts:
1. Nedeljkovic cost a 3rd
2. Husso cost a 3rd
3. Toronto traded Mrazek (2x$3.8M) + a 1st for a 2nd
4. Sens traded Matt Murray (2x$4.7M) with a 3rd + 7th for "futures"

It shouldn't cost a fortune to get Vejmelka or unload Petersen.
