Spence works hard, just doesn’t have the physicality and talent to compete on a nightly basis against the top teams. It is what it is.

I see 40 points for Spence this year.
It would be helpful if this comes true. I just don’t see how. I don’t think we see him on the PP with Doughty and Clarke.

I’m really uncertain as to what Spence is. I know he has big supporters on this board. I just don’t know what to expect.

It’s not that I dislike Spence. I don’t.
It is just that I have no idea.

It’s an ambitious hope, but he was pretty held back playing with Englund. He will have more minutes with Gavrikov and the opportunity to play his game more, which is to puck move and not have to spend most time covering for his partner. He won’t get many PP points so 40 is a lot if it’s mostly 5 on 5, but he’s delivered big at every level he’s played. I think his second full season is when we start to see him shine more consistently.

Yeah, he had the misfortune of being paired with Englund. Perhaps a blessing in disguise that Spence had to play a cautious role which may benefit him in the long run. Agree that Spence will be a bit more free to play his game and get more minutes. But he will also play against better players and that’s where I have some concerns.

For sure. Better competition is always the unknown. But still, will have a much more responsible partner.

The D on this team is pretty weird generally. The GA numbers have been pretty excellent but the offense has been quite poor. The offense should tick up this season but I have to think the goals against will as well. There is not a current longterm option at 2nd LD that makes sense and the third pair LD is essentially there for an intangible game to the max. A lot is riding on Spence and Clarke killing it on the rush and mistakes against to be limited as possible. Truly sink or swim for them.

I don’t see Clarke on the top PP unit. Too much of a liability with Doughty jumping into the play. I hope Clarke gets another year in Ontario. I don’t want to see him getting physically abused each night. It was hard to watch that last series he played against the FireBirds.

I totally agree with you, but also feel if we leave Clarke in the AHL, while he may gain weight/muscle during the season, his skills will also begin to erode due to the competition level not being challenging enough for him. Hopefully they have him on a solid fitness plan during the offseason and he can come in as ready as possible, and continue to adapt as the season progresses.

Also I'd prefer to see him on PP1 and Doughty moved to PP2 (though that leaves us potentially very weak in the defensive zone). If both are placed on PP1 then Clarke essentially becomes a forward, which may also work, but I would like to see our dependency on Doughty begin to be lessened going forward.
